"Lifetime License holder thought"

I hold a lifetime license in the state of Utah. I put in and get any of the areas I want to hunt in Utah. I believe their are around 3000 of us left ? Correct me if I am wrong. I generally put in for the area my family does. So I can hunt with other family members. Last year the other Family members want to put in for the Rifle hunt southern Utah. Well the only two that drew were my 80 year old dad and myself ! That both have a lifetime license. So last year I mentored my fourteen year old daughter to help her get her first buck.
So If you had and could put in for the best unit in Utah for the biggest buck. What would it be ? I already have a few ideas. But not to dirty the waters. I will wait before posting my thoughts.I hope that I may get a couple different ideas. Then the normal ones that I think are what are what everyone will say . So what do you think ?

I love the youth mentor tags and have used them for my daughter previously. However, I don't really like that a person with a lifetime license can get any of the really good general tags every year and then mentor them. They did away with the loop hole that gave people in the know a tag every year. This seems more unfair than the loop hole to me.

3. "RE: Lifetime License holder thought"

LOL I almost posted this exact question last night. Had it mostly written out then thought better of it just 'cause I didn't want to hear the sour grapes with lifetime tag envy. I bought mine when I was 14 and I'll tell ya what, the state and other hunters have come out way on top. I may get the tag but I generally haven't had the time to put in much and probably have only harvested 1 out of 5 years maybe much less. My dad also has a lifetime tag the state and other hunters have always come out on top with. In the last 25 years, I think he harvested 1.

I was going to pose the question as I simply put in for either Box Elder or Cache for the last 25 years and thought I'd pick up a change of scenery and go south or central.

I'm not sure I'd characterize it as a loophole. It was sold as is and the restrictions are much more than they were when purchased. I can see guys being pissed about it but be mad at the state for selling it to me not mad at me for buying it. Like I say, for a tag holder I know many many others who w/out a lifetime, put more days in the field and harvest way more animals than I care to. The only ones with even a small legit beech on it would be those born too late to get in on the tag. If you could have bought it and didn't than too bad for you I guess. I worked my tail feathers off for my tag which was $500.00 I think at age 14.

It stinks that 3000 people have access to tags that my kids, who were born in this state, can't and never will have the same access. They weren't alive to be able to purchase, and can't purcahse now. Not right that 3000 people get 5% of general season deer tags that the other 3 million people in this state can't have a chance to get.

Time for the state to stop calling it general season deer tag! It is a limited tag. Lifetime license holders should get a hunting license, but not a limited entry tag!!

getting off subject, sorry I am adding to derailment here...

I can see both sides. There was basically a contract signed when they purchased those tags, for UT to simply shred the contract is not right. Like stated above, how many tags are actually used by the few remaining hunters?

Other side I can see too, not having the opportunity to buy the same license is not exactly a fair situation.

However, I do agree that UT having two different point systems is a scam! which is an entirely different subject.

Good on you for gifting your tags though to get young ones involved and sharing memories over generations

Wow I'm surprised so many people in favor of lifetime licenses. oh wait - everyone in favor has a lifetime license. I would admit that if I had one, I wouldn't want it changed either. Still not fair and needs to be changed.

Best would be if you draw, same drawing as someone with a regular license - yours is free. Back then everyone could get a general season deer tag. Times change, so should the lifetime license. -- Or bring them back so I can join the party!!!

Anyone whining about a contract made with the government where a citizen exchanges their money for a service, you'll happily forfeit any such contracts you've made with the government?

Such as the hunting tag you buy in January but don't use until October?

Or, thinking longer term, Social Security?

Loophole. Good lord.

Or, whining that you don't have the opportunity today to do something that someone 30 years ago did? Perhaps you'd be willing to write your complaints in a letter to the editor and hope it is printed. That was the closest thing to an internet forum 30 years ago.

Hunting is clearly too challenging for you, perhaps you can snapchat filter a deer into one of your selfies.

10. "RE: Lifetime License holder thought"

I had the opportunity to purchase a Life Time tag in Utah, but had a young family and the money simply wasn't there. Wish it had been but sometimes things just don't roll out your way. I've never resented another man's good fortunate, especially when he's had to lay down his hard earned cash to come by it.

I have three friends with Utah Life Time tags, they are all in the mid-seventies. Since they purchased those tags, many, many years ago, I know for a fact they have killed less than 5 deer total, between the three of them. Like 1911 and his family, they haven't keep many sportsmen from harvesting a mule deer.

BigJohn, I can't speak for the entire State, but if you're up to it, I think the Beaver may be the best unit to hunt for mature bucks, in our area right now, but it's deep and steep and you won't likely see them form the roads. I don't hunt it because I'm to old to get back in. Course you probably know that better than most. I think, the terrain there still allows a few big ones to survive every year and our weather has been helping the last five or six years, and I think the unit management (option 2) is allowing a small % of the bucks to survive as well, so when you combine the two, I think that might be your go to. The Pahvant used to be the one but the population is so very low there now that the numbers just aren't there to do it anymore. I've done a number of winter counts on the Pahvant this year and the mule deer are simply not there. And...... the Beaver is on your way.

Hope you can lock on to a giant this year.

DC

Like others have said. It's not a loop hole. We bought a lifetime license that the state of Utah sold for years. They where going to discontinuing selling them so they made it known. You have until some date to buy your lifetime license. So we got together enough money to buy one for my Dad, brother and myself. 1500 bucks was a lot back then, February 25th 1994 . I had two young sons at the time. Many where buying them for there young children. But so many said your stupid to spend that much when you can just buy a tag every year. Hind sight being 20 20. I and my boys wish we would have bought them tags at the time. But we listened to those saying we where crazy to buy them. So we bought a lifetime Hunting and Fishing license. That includes your upland game, fishing license and a Deer tag.
I thought everyone knew this ? I didn't really think it would be the issue.
2lumpy We have seen some good bucks come off the unit last year.
As far as tags go . So in the last 13 years I have taken two bucks. One my daughter shot last year with the mentor program. The other in 2004 on the Phavant unit. My son and I side by side, shot and the same time.A nice buck 170 class. When we got over to it only one hole in his side. So I told him congratulations and he tagged the buck. Not really knowing who made the shot ? So that one shouldn't really go against me. After that I can't remember the last buck I shot . I enjoy hunting, but prefer to eat elk or Buffalo !

Lifetime hunting and fishing license = Best $500 a 13 year old kid could have ever spent!

I have far surpassed that total of $500 in combination licenses in addition the cost of deer tags each year. And hopefully I have more years left doing this than I have already done it in my life to this point.

Fair? I don't think it's fair people got to hunt the Henrys on a general deer tag every year before I was born and now I can't. I don't think it's fair people were allowed to homestead land back in the day and now I have to buy it. I could go on, but then I'd just look like I'm whining.

I think the dead line must have been February 28th ? My boys ask me why I didn't buy them one. I just tell them. I didn't know if the would be piano playing sissies and not wanting to hunt. Before I start getting hate mail. They both grew up playing the piano and sports.

My dad bought me one when I was either 13 or 14. I turned 14 that year so I could have been 13. He did not have much money, but had great foresight. One of the best gifts of my life, thanks Dad! To the question now. I would hunt thousand lakes every year however, it is just too far away. I hunt the Ogden unit every year. I know it and it is my backyard. I use to focus more on other hunts and treat the general Utah as a back up hunt. However, the last six or seven years I have made it more of a focus, and I am somewhat satisfied with my results. I can't wait for this next coming season!!

Schoolhouse from the Thousands lakes unit you can see the back side of the mountain where our cabin sits. So that is one that I have often thought of. We see a lot of good bucks down there every year. But in November. So my number one was Thousand Lake area. Number two Beaver ! Any others with a different thought? My little piece of heaven.

I was 22 in 1994 .
I wanted one but couldn't cough up the money and the time
Just staring out 500 hundred was a lot .
That said . Do I wish I had one yes !
But honestly the state has already compromised
the originally agreement .
At the time you could hunt the whole state or at least
one of the 5 original units ?And that's what they paid for.
Now your narrowed to a lot smaller unit .
What kind of society do we live in were we want Government
to go back on there word ?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-17 AT 10:56 PM (MST)

In 1994 I was going to college and driving truck for RMC foods. I didn't have 500 bucks but I had a brand new Winchester model 70 classic stainless .338 win and took that down to Cedar Post pawn and got a $500 loan.

When I went and bought my lifetime license, I asked if I could buy them for my unborn children. No luck with that. Most people thought we were crazy to spend that money but many other states had already gone to draw only, it was just a matter of time before Utah did.

Best $500 I ever spent.

deadibob , I too was driving for RMC Foods in 94 when I bought mine . RMC drivers are not rich but I new it was worth digging up 500 bucks for. My little brother was in the military with an out of state address and had to get the Ut attorney general involved to buy his. His was issued in March of 94 , the last one ever sold in the state of Ut.

Count me as part of the jealous crowd. I kick my own dumb ass every time I think about it. Of course back then $500 was a lot of money when you don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out.

I wish I wasn't 7 yrs old when they did away. I have only went without a deer tag one year. That was the first year the archery tags actually sold out for deer. So anytime I can get an archery tag I feel greatful. I know the year I don't draw a tag i'll be envious of the lifetime license holders.

What pisses me off is the big-game regulations. In the lifetime license section it starts out with: "If you are one of the lucky lifetime-license holders", Luck my f'n ass. Luck had nothing to do with it. It should say: "If you are one of the few smart mother f'rs who had enough foresight and sacrificed to buy a lifetime license, congratulations"; end of story.

lmao....

I think I'm getting as much amusement from the lifetime tag envy snowflakes throwing a tantrum as I glean from the anti trump snowflakes. Nothing but bitter tears mingled with weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth.

Let me share with you something the state of Utah understood at the time we all purchased our lifetime licenses. It's called compound interest. $500.00 invested in an index fund 30 years ago is now worth $9329.00. (That's the S&P last 30 years 9.794% rate) If you divide that by the 30 years of hunting it equals $310.97 average price paid for your license. Don't know if the state was wise enough to invest the money, but if they did, they will make a lot more on lifetime license holders than any other hunters. I'm not sure it's fair either, but maybe it was us stupid hunters who got taken advantage of and we still think we got a good deal.

There were 3879 general deer tags issued to lifetime license holders in 2016. 321 of them had become nonresidents.

BigJohn,
The Thousand Lake is only popular because it was being used to take advantage of the 2nd choice loophole (also a smart F-r loophole but that one was closed on us). I would stear clear of Thousand Lake......yeah stay away....wasted tag.

No sense in crying about the lifetime tags. It is what it is.
Frickin freeloaders!
About the O.P., why would anyone want to publicly hotspot a specific unit as being the best?
Generally speaking, a lot more bucks have made the B & C East of I-15, compared to the bucks on the West side of the highway.

I thought of that to Ridge. But really this last year there we so many great bucks taken off so many general units. What about Wasatch, South Oak creek , Beaver and Pine valley. I can keep going. If you are a hunter and have any connection to the hunting world. Threw the internet , insta , Facebook. There where some great buck even better then those taken off the great Henry's . Muley 73 yes I know there are no big bucks on the Thousand Lakes 😉 We will keep away from there. Well after Friday's Expo post. We can put in for our Utah draws. Anyone feeling lucky ? 🤠🤠🤠

BigJohn, you can PM me any time. I would bet that most of the biggest general season bucks killed, were from hunters that knew the unit very well and had spent a lot of time on it.

Seems like we all should be glad that those lifetimers have tags each year based on the first few threads I read. If they are dumb enough to choose those northern junk units year after year and only harvest deer every 5th year (and prob 2-4 yr old immature bucks) then it's good for the rest of us residence that know which units have the good deer. I would assume most lifetime tag holders are getting older now and can't hit the hill like they did 30yrs ago. Having said that it's pretty rare to see 190+ class bucks from the quad roads so any of you mad about lifetime tag holders are bumper to bumper with them in the low country and are fighting over the forkys running with the doe herds. Give up the resentment. Also, you guys wining about taga for the kids, if your young enough to have kids barely old enough to hunt then turn off their damn tablets and hike your kids up on the hill and find them some decent deer. Take the out scouting all summer. They will thank you for it later in life.

English isn't your strong point. Rich coming from someone calling people stupid. Not to worry though son, I put in for a Southern unit this go around. I hope I don't bump you. I would feel bad.

Big John,

Maybe I'll see you down on the Thousand Lakes. Just pulled the trigger on it. I'll bring some Tops tobacco and if we don't feel like hunting we can use the tags for Zig Zag rolling paper. We can post up the video here later for the snow flakes to chew on next year.

Ok 1911 but with it being such a popular area we may not get tags. 😂😂. We must be about the same age because I loved my Alpine stereo. I had one of the first CD players that came out. Of course we had Rancho shocks !!!
