"1st Timer in Nevada Unit 211-213"

Hello all,

I grew up not far from this unit (near Goldfield, NV) and was excited to draw it for my first mule deer hunt. I will have around 15 straight days to be out there and was wondering if anyone was familiar with the area and had any tips regarding areas to focus on and whether to spread out my 15 days over several of the different mountains or just pick one and stay on it.

Any other general tips would be appreciated as it's my first mule deer hunt. I am a fairly experienced backpacker and grew up climbing in nearby mountains in the area. If anyone else has a tag for the area or a nearby area I would willing to help out as a pack mule or taking photos/etc. while I'm up there.

Due to my job keeping me out of area most of the year, I'll only have two weeks or so right before the season start on Nov 5 to scout.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing from you guys!

I live in Wyoming but have hunted that country a few times. We had friends who used to own the Lida Ranch. Spent lots of time there in my youth.

I'd say you'll get bored if you stay in one place that long. It is big country. Bucks could be in a fair number of places. I always thought water was a key, but I saw bucks 3-4 miles from water just at daylight. There's good country both north and south of the highway.

If your dates are set, that's great. But I wouldn't be scared to spend Thanksgiving week there. Later might be better for the rut and cooler/colder weather.

I'd focus on areas that have lots of bitterbrush or cliff rose. Seems like feed is the key.

Best of luck and we'll hope for pics about December 1.

Hunted there a few years back in the Inyo NF just north of Boundry peak in and around Trail creek up high. There is a trailhead to hike Boundry which is about where I camped but this was archery season though. Deer were spread all over but not high numbers. I always wanted to go check out mustang mountain but never got over there. Big canyon country but real open so good for glassing up there which is why I liked it.
Always heard about the Lida area too but never hunted it

Thanks, I'll be sure to look into that area as well, weather depending.
