"Crazy Cactus'ish Archery Muley"

Hey folks, so my wish came true for a 'meat-buck' muley this year with archery equipment. As you can see, he is a main-frame spike/fork with lots of stickers/drops. Someone said he was a Cactus buck, which to me, sounds very plausible, barring some genetic or injury. I aged him out at 4 or 5 1/2 years old, based on tooth wear.

Based on ya'lls experience, what do you think? In your past hunts, have you seen this before on your hunts? I assume this is fairly rare.

Cheers

LAST EDITED ON Aug-14-17 AT 04:05 PM (MST)

I'd think it would have abnormal testicles also, from what I've read they lack the hormones to even shed their velvet and sometimes antlers

That deer is a transvestite.
When he was a buck he had an injury to his balls that caused him to essentially change sex.usually caused by a tick boring in or maybe getting hung on a fence. Since the injury it hasn't shed the antlers or rubbed the velvet although the antlers continue to grow in a funky way usually resulting in the cactus points. If you notice the face now looks more like a doe than a buck.
Nice job with the pics. Especially the one where you propped its head up with those rocks.
Congratulations on two trophy Mule Deer lady. The giant you killed last year and now this unusual one will make for a great trophy display.

I'd Check with the Local Cowboys!

Back Me Off to 1,700 Yards,650 is a Little Close & I'm Not Comfortable with it!

A GUT SHOT at 1,700 Yards will Still Make Some Good BRAGGIN Rights so I Can Say I At Least Hit Him!

You make a good point Tikka, I'll back off of 5 years old; however, with the fully erupted 3rd cusp on the last molar showing good wear and slanting downward, and the dentine/enamal ratios on the rest, I'm not backing off of 4 years old (max).

To everyone else, thanks for the insight. I appreciate your good explanations and shared stories.

Cheers!

I shot a Stag buck a few years ago down south in the Monticello area and it also had velvet on it's horns in late October. Huge horns 8" bases and double eye guards on both sides.

When I went to gut him I saw that his he had junk that was very small. Pea size nuts and a very small youho.

Did yours have the same thing? just wondering as I have shot two of these kinds of bucks in my life.
