Quick poll:

If you were getting "older" and had enough points or were guaranteed a multi season tag in the next 2 years for Bookcliffs or Vernon.

Which would you do and why?

Just for reference, you live right in between both units (Heber).

The question I have for you is what goal do you have in mind? What is the objective of the hunt? Just a fun hunt or a chance at a BIG buck?

>Which unit do you know better?
>I like Vernon better, but
>they are both good.

I have spent 1 day on each unit.

The overall goal is to have fun, and have a chance at a big buck. The reason for looking at those units, is strictly because the option to hunt all three and the odds of drawing with a good enough body to hunt hard.

If some biologists don't pull their heads out of there a55es and implement a management hunt I'd never waste a single point on the vernon. Back in 2010 I saw some great bucks on my hunt and I also saw some big management bucks. There are still some big deer on that unit but from what I've seen in years since I've had the tag it has been a disappointment quality and quantity of bucks. With a multi-season tag you'd be able to spend more time increasing odds at a better buck. Oh and a piece of advise on the vernon you'll see more people waiting to draw the tag or helping a tag holder than people hunting. The vernon does have some cool country. I think they need to cull some of the junk bucks though before it becomes a better unit and believe me it would make it a better unit if so. I killed a 140 buck on my archery hunt but missed 2 other bucks that were really good upper end bucks. I would say the 2 units are pretty comparable in average quality. Both produce some big bucks.

Bess,

It's not me bud. It's my dad, he wants to have a decent hunt whereas he is getting older, and then he wants to try and draw

Both units will provide opportunities for an ?average buck?. I'm with Elkass. I'd be saving a few more points for a better chance at a bigger buck but that's just me. Whether you hunt one season or 3 seasons there has to be big bucks to shoot. 3 seasons in both those ?mid tier? units will only produce mediocre quality. If you're happy with a 150? buck, both units will fit the bill.

I'd take a Paunsy Muzzy tag over the multi season in either the books or the Vernon.

You don't even need to be in good shape. Just drive the roads and pick the one you want.

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

Hey DBG!

Another Week or Two & The Rut will be going on in the Book Cliffs!

Take Your Dad Out & Check what's doing the Breeding for the Most part!

There are Exceptions!

But not many!

I Don't Believe the PAUNS is as easy as Stu says it is!

But at least you'd be Hunting where there are a Few your Dad 'Might' Shoot!

Your Dad Ain't Gonna Shoot 98% of the Bucks that Survive in the Book Cliffs!

I hunted Vernon last year. It's not what it used to be. I killed a 166" buck and that was the biggest I saw. Used to see a lot more big bucks out there.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-17 AT 07:07AM (MST)[p] I Do Truely Believe for it to Happen on a Big Buck it'll do you way more Good to be Lucky than Skillful in the Book Cliffs!

Sad but True!

The Whole NE Region Deer Herd is Pitiful!

He has no false expectations of either of these units being a trophy hunt. He is strictly looking the experience on this hunt.

Due to his schedule over the next few years he will need the multi season to accommodate.

So with his points, and his desire to try for one more LE archery elk he has narrowed it down to these units.

If you want to see ALOT of deer and a lot of 150 plus 4x4s and some bigger freaks and have a good time go to Vernon. Just got back from a great hunt there. There are some bigger ones there too, but you will have to work for them just like anywhere else. good luck
