Mule deer and mountain lions

Here?s a video I took while scouting this past summer. It was a great morning of observing nature. I saw a total of 5 mountain lions while scouting and hunting this year. I usually see one or two but this year was different. Has anyone else noticed a difference? I might have just been fortunate but I did do more scouting too.
While I was watching this buck I could tell he was nervous and I soon saw why.

That is some great footage all around. I think there is just more predators now. Back in the 60-70's there was way more predator control and 10-80 took care of most coyotes. I live in Oregon and we can't hunt cats with dogs or bait Bears. The Wolves are here now and in my kids lifetime there will be more predators in Oregon than deer if any deer at all.

If you are in ID you may be better off?

Yep those big bad woofs will kill off all the deer and elk like they have in wy mt and id...oh wait no they didnt....

I was actually addressing just Oregon as our F&W Dept has absolutly no plan to manage Woofs as you say, and Bears and Cougars are hardley managed either. Just luck when a deer or elk hunter runs into one.

Awesome, sorry I didn't realize you were a Big Game Biologist especially in Oregon. I'm glad you have everything under control with predator management in the west.

Where would we be without you?

There is no doubt that predators can have an impact on prey populations, but if they consume all the prey base, they wouldn't exist. In a classic predator-prey model, the prey base increases, followed by an increase in predators. the predator population follows the increase in prey base, until the balance is tipped, then the prey declines, followed by a decline in predators.....been that way since the dawn of time......until you introduce modern man into the equation. We want the prey for ourselves. This is understandable. I love to hunt as much as the next guy....probably more. Life is all about balance.

Awesome,

Not sure what you are trying to say, but...if you are trying to say the wolf. lion, bear, coyote does not effect big game population your lost, crazy or just dumb. I hunted south of Yellowstone starting about 20 years ago, 18 miles into the wilderness. The area has been on a sever decline since I started hunting there. I was there 3 years ago and saw more wolves, grizzly bears than elk and deer. The place I hunt deer in Colorado has been hammered by Mt lions, and the Flat tops wilderness is over run with bears.

Try and shoot some dogs and a bear to help the balance to save a few deer for yourself to hunt, that's the way the apex predators in the wild work try and eliminate competition in your area.

Right on Kickerbuck !

I run a trapline in the winter.

I see fresh lion tracks following my trails in the snow nearly everyday. I have had cat tracks on top of tracks that I had just made several minutes before.

Have had a cat dig up a dozen of my sets, up and down a canyon, in one night.

Have had cats rip caught animals out of traps.

Have had to release a lion caught by a toe. That there is a sporty rodeo for you if you've never done it.

This happens nearly daily now. Certainly with every fresh snow. Many years ago when I was younger I would trap all winter and only see a few tracks.

Definitely increasing in numbers.

I did not say one word about anything killing anything. I said there were more cats now. Period.
I can not stand smart-mouthed jackasses online that try and put words in my mouth that I did not say.

Dryfly I'm with you, I was kinda quoting what 《《《《《《Awesome》》》》》》 had responded to me earlier in the post about how the Wolves and predators haven't hurt deer and elk.

Sorry it was meant for him not you that's why I put the smile face. I agree with you lots of cats and predators now days. Amazing you see their tracks in your tracks all the time.

Keep up the good work!

If wolves are under great control why have meat cutters and outfitters who were in business for years went out of business in Gardner Montana. Because the light and heat bill outweighed the profit of meat being cut. And Clients don't want to hunt up there for elk anymore. Awesome you are very out of touch with what predators have done in the west. Yes hunting technology is a big factor as well but wolves have wreaked havoc on some elk and deer populations.

"We don't have a gun problem we have prescription drug problem."

Oh a late migration hunt is around no longer? No more shooting big bulls as they wallow through deep snow? Boo Hoo.

That's your response? So the woofs as you call them have only affected one late season bull elk hunt that doesn't exist anymore in the west?

I'm really glad you cleared all that up for me! It seems I remember WY, MT, and ID fighting like hell with the FEDS to be able to hunt, trap, and try and manage them because they were getting so populated and their big game herds were struggling. If they weren't a problem why the long drawn out fight from those F&W depts to try and delist them?

You are right we will be just fine here in Oregon with the deer and elk with yet another unmanaged predator. Geees what was I thinking?

Its real terrible here in wyoming with the wolves. We can only shoot TWO elk per person. Damn shame.

I never said they were not a problem. Thats another one of your assumptions and speaking about something you know nothing about.

The wolf reintroduction was a success and now we get to manage them. Im glad we have them and they are not going anywhere.

So boo hoo.

That's funny because last time I checked I was only talking about Oregon in my initial post. Maybe you know something I don't about how The F&W dept here in Oregon handles predators and now wolves? We have no predator management and no plan to manage or hunt wolves unless it's a livestock issue.

Just to sum one thing up for you, not that you care, but in 1994 we could no longer hunt cats with dogs. A few years back the F&W dept here had to contract a Government trapper to run dogs for cats in the Steens unit because the deer were going to be extinct. The 1st day the guy treeed 8 cats and his dogs were exhausted.

I'm all for predators as long as they are managed properly.

Like I said Oregon didn't need another unmanaged predator! Be thankful you live in a RED STATE!!!

I don't really hunt Elk, but I will take the compliment! :)
