This will be my 4th time down to the desert chasing AZ mule deer with the bow this Jan, big difference is this year going without a guide unlike the prior 3. I shot a broken tine warrior my first time out and that's been it so far, besides some great times and good deer sightings. Heading down with my buddy from NorCal and pulling a trailer possibly for lodging- otherwise canvas tent and mr. heater'- I've seen everything from flood style rains, to snow, to 80' degree heat - Preparing for all of that.

Really excited about this upcoming hunt and looking forward to getting behind the glass and finding those desert bucks roaming for tail. Glass, glass, glass, not finding any deer, move and then keep glassing! Kids go back to school on the 8th so I'll likely me on the road on the 9th. Hit me up if your heading down there and want to keep in touch or have any questions - happy to help with what I know, which is not much! - Anyone have any luck with the decoy!?!

Really enjoyable hunt encourage anyone interested to give it a shot...

>Good luck on your hunt!
>Should be a fun time,
>wish I could get down
>there!

Dan - get your tail back down to the desert, your technically eligible for another AZ deer tag in 2 weeks!

Hey Beast. From NorCal as well, and I'll be down there for the 1st week of Jan as well. This will be my 4th trip as well. 1 prior to xmas, and 2 after...this will be my 1st in Jan. Have had lots of fun down there, but yet to harvest one...maybe this year! Feel free to PM me
-Gary

I'll be down in southern AZ from CO chasing Miley's and fours deer. Shoot me a pm if you want.

I'm in unit 28 right now. Lots of tanks (more like 5 gallon buckets hooked up to a big tank) on the blm land have water from what I'm seeing.

Glassed all day in the Guthrie peak area and near 191 and the back country byway and haven't seen any deer yet.

Going to try up in the Gilas by fort Thomas tomorrow morning then maybe ash peak area in the evening. I don't trust my truck fully so trying to stay within a mile or two of the main highways in the evenings in case I have vehicle issues....

Anyone else in this area? never hunted deer with the bow before. Even though it's warm should the deer still be up and rutting most of the day? I'm in an old red dodge with a white stripe on the cab if anyone else is hunting here currently. I'll probably be sitting in the truck bed with the spotter and my binos until I finally locate a deer...

Inn a bit below you in safford. Found someone today but couldn't close the deal with the bow. Had a fun stalk but the buck fed away from me.

Truck wouldn't start so now reprioritizing to figure that out. It's about 5 miles back in. Got a ride out from a guy who just happened to go for a drive in his jeep this evening. Woulda been a cold night otherwise although i did have a sleeping bag and enough food for the night (and water for the week) so I was never in any danger at least.

Packing up right now. Food and water for a week.Staying 3 days.clothes for a month.Hoping for a change in weather. don't want to hang meat in sun from nearest creosote.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-31-17 AT 07:07PM (MST)[p]Good luck on the hunt! I just got this guy yesterday in 18b. DIY solo hunt and first time hunting in Arizona with an otc tag. Not a giant but definitely the best and one of the few I seen in the area I was hunting

Nice! Ended up heading back a day early due to truck issues.

I finally found a few does and figured there'd be a buck around. About 150 yards out I was able to locate the buck and then got into about 80 yards before setting up. They were bedded but eventually 2 Does got up and fed to within about 40 yards, then one of em spotted me and walked back the other way. The buck fed away from me with the larger group so I never got within range for a shot.

Truck wouldn't start so after getting a ride into town from the last guy heading outta the area I came back the next day for the truck and then headed home once I got it going.

Fun time though and I'll definitely be picking up that tag again.

Hope you guys do well out there!

Thanks for the compliments. I don't mind telling anybody where I was. It's a difficult area to hunt at best, but we just happened to get lucky. You'll see some bruisers, but getting to them is a different story. I was in Unit 45. Yes, the Kofa. It's a huge area so there is plenty of room for ya'll! Best of luck to all of you that are heading out.

Thanks for the info KODIAK.BIG area is right!
Just returned from 4 brutal lone days in 37B.
still licking my wounds, maybe I'll scout down there in the future.

U don't have to worry about me stealing ur area :) I'm pretty happy with the area I hunted in and it's close to home. Perfect for an over the counter hunt. Very nice buck though.. great job.

Headed out on Sunday the 14th, looks like a little rain tomorrow and a cold snap which should get those does cycling!
