This buck is sick!

I love this site! I would never have known something like this was taken in Utah. I dont know which general unit but this buck is awesome. I hoped for so many years that Utah would go to limited draw units of more than the 5 they had. It is so cool to see the bucks coming back. I no longer have to hear about it from the ol dude across the street. Looks like some of the good ol days are back. I know we cant buy them OTC at Kmart like we used to but we have 3.5 million people here.

Again, this buck is so sweet! Thanks for sharing whoever this guy is. Nice work!

There are a few that slip through the cracks. I found this buck in a general area a few years ago and hunted him a bunch the first year. It was fun. Pretty much had it to myself. I should've got him that year. So, so close.
Others caught onto this buck and the next year other people were hunting him. I gave it only 3 days, then decided to hunt Wyoming. The buck still almost survived the season though, but was taken right at the end.
There are a few big ones taken every year in general season Utah.

I wouldn't say the good ole days are back. Maybe in the archery only area. If it were as difficult to harvest game now as it was in the 60's, then the good ole days would be back.

I am sadly a Utah General Hunter, and don't kid yourselves the Mule deer hunting on Utah General hunts are not good and neither are our deer numbers. But every once in a while somebody will LUCK into a good buck and you will see posts like this one. Please don't kid yourselves Utah deer hunting will never be what it was unless Major measures are taken to do so, and we all know that the DWR is not willing to take a hit in their wallet like that.

Founder, great site here. I didnt know so many guys from Utah were on a site like this.

I love that I can find pics and bucks like yours and this other guys. Without the net and this site I would not have had this conversation. Anyway.

The good ol days are not back I get that. But, 5 years ago there were not very many bucks like this slipping through the cracks. It does feel like a few more are around now than have been. It is now better than it was in the 2000's. It is better than it was in the 90's. It is darn near as good as the 80's and maybe as good. At least a few quality bucks are showing up. So cool to see it change for the better.

Founder, thanks for sharing.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-17-18 AT 03:19PM (MST)[p]do you think its more deer, or the technology in optics, weapons? also i think you are seeing more animals that have been harvested on social media, that otherwise you would not have known or heard about.

Would be curious as to your thoughts about "harder".

I'm intrigued by the idea of open sight limits on centerfield(maybe include 1 x for us old timers).

Seems dad with his .303 Brit, and grandpa with the lever gun, did pretty well.

Open sight units would be awesome. It would also improve the deer herd in the applied units. Doubt many people anymore can hit a milk jug or even a 5 gallon bucket at the give or take 200yd mark with open sights. That's why we can now use high powered scopes for muzzleloaders. To lazy to get within 150yds

"Every once in a while"?
I know of at least ten 190"+ bucks coming from the same canyon in the last six years.
Between myself and two friends, we've killed three 200"+ and two 190"+ bucks in the past six years. All Utah general season public lands bucks.
So I wouldn't say Utah is all that bad.

...might have a bunch more wounded deer as well if open sights are used. I think limiting tags would be the best answer to help the herd improve.

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

At some point we as hunters have got to start figuring out that we can't keep limiting tags. Every guy who gets cut out doesn't buy guns, ammo, etc which means Pittman Robinson isn't getting funded. Its also potentially another voter that doesn't help us maintain political power.

We went down that road once. We lost a ton of revenue to dwr( enter $fw) in lost taxes from sporting goods. But more important we lost political clout.

Besides. Even with more tag cuts, the efficiency we kill with due to tech, isn't sustainable either.

We already have a lot of that with this new long range mind set. At least it would be easier to get on a blood trail at 150yds away rather then 800-1200yds. Unless one drops in its tracks I doubt most people will walk that far to check for blood. Just another free opinion though.

Just judging from the terrain, vegetation and antler configuration in the photos of this buck, I've got a pretty good idea which unit this deer came from...

I have often wondered this.... particularly with Utah. Have spent 6 years there. It definitely seems like we see more bucks like this on boards and in our newsfeeds, but hard to believe the overall number of trophies sitting general has increased that much.

My biggest worry is that after I'm dead my wife will sell my hunting gear for what I told her I paid for it!
