15 NR Points S. Slope Diamond or ?

I posted this in the Utah Forum but got a suggestion to move it up here so here goes.

I am a non-res with 15 deer points. Not sure if I want to try to draw this year or not but I figure I better do some digging just in case. This will be a one-and-done hunt for me as I am soon to be 62.

South Slope, Diamond Mountain has caught my eye. The muzzy dates seem terrible but the success rate is very high. The rifle dates aren't that great either and there is a full moon smack dab in the middle of it. Does one of the two typically offer better odds for a 180 buck?

Just looking for some info from guys that have done this hunt in either of those seasons. Suggestions on other units to spend the points on would also be welcomed. Let me add, I have no problem waiting a few more years if that makes sense as 15 is right on the cusp of some other options.

Thanks in advance for any intel.

There is a good deal of private up there and that would make me leery about burning that many points. Last time I was up there I recall "Two Dogs" or something like that had a lot of the private tied up. Have you looked at the a Book Cliffs? With your points you could do archery and really close to drawing the other weapon types. Mostly public land and what I would consider a fun hunt, just not huge trophy potential.

I only know that there's quite a lot of private. Most hunters report the biggest deer being on private.

The Book Cliffs would offer a better hunt, but, you see a lot of 3 year old 4 points. I've only ever seen photos of Diamond Mtn deer from private... Is like to see public land ones, but not a lot of people hunt it.

Diamond can be difficult because of the private land/access issues. If you are going to do it, make sure you have your bases covered with land boundaries. Can be a really fun hunt or really frustrating if the deer never leave private. Unless you're not above paying a trespass fee, that might be another option.

Lots of private land but it's not really an issue. Muzzy is better than rifle as you get to hunt before. Do it. You won't regret it.

There are some dandy bucks on that unit I have a few friends that know it very well the majority of the best bucks they see on public land is during the archery hunt. What type of buck are you hoping for?

I say go for it. The trophy quality on that unit right now is one of the best in the state. There have been some great deer on that unit the last couple of years. I've hunted Diamond several times and there is more accessable public ground than you can possibly hunt in a season. The best bucks I have seen have been on state and BLM land. Take your pick on which season you want to hunt. My personal preference would be the archery hunt but the muzzleloader hunt would be a close second, less pressure from other hunters. Most of the deer on that unit do a slight migration between the archery season and the muzzleloader season, about the time they shed their velvet.
There is only a small number of non resident tags given there so even with 15 points I am not sure how good your odds are? Sounds as though you may have already done some checking on that though. Whatever you decide to do good luck!
