New member, first post. Any body have any recent experience with the early rifle hunt in Colorado 82/86? It has been quite a few years since I have been in the area and trying to decide if I should use my points here. I'm a non-resident and have enough points to draw ( I think) and wondering if this area is worth it.

I have spent some time up there and can see 86 high country from my house. I also have more than enough points to draw it and every year I try to justify spending the points on that hunt. I just went through my annual exercise again trying to decide and came up with the same answer as before, in my opinion, it isn't worth the points.

Those two units are OTC archery elk with a ton of archery deer tags and not a lot of deer. It is pretty country but lung buster country for sure. Just my opinion but there are better ways to spend the points required for that tag.

A couple years back they had several leftover alpine only buck tags... That was not the case last year. I muzzle loader elk hunted 86 last year, and spent a lot of time out there. But did not run across many deer. Maybe I just wasn't looking for them, but I have heard that the Sangre's just aren't what they used to be for Muleys.

There have not been any truly "leftover" tags in that unit//early rifle hunt since it started. Maybe some in other units. There have been some returned tags that can now be picked up on the resale list.

That is not an area where bad winters should affect the deer herd all that bad and it is rugged enough that some bruisers make it past hunters every year. ALL high country hunts have relatively few deer, but the potential for some whoppers exists. If you choose to go, be in the best shape of your life and do lots of research. Also be ready to move to new locations, if your first option doesn't pan out.

Thanks for the information. Have archery hunted 86 several times just not recently. Has anybody been there during the early rifle hunt? Would love to avoid areas the outfitters like to go. Not asking for areas to hunt just a couple areas to avoid.

Huntnut, Just wondering if you drew this tag and if so, how did the hunt go? How many points did you use? I'm also thinking of putting in for this in 2019. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks
