I drew an archery mule deer tag for units 35, 36, 45, and 361. I am from WI and this is my first time hunting out west. I am wondering if anyone had archery hunted these units before and have any tips on how to get away from people and find deer, or if anyone has any general tips for a first time western hunter. Any tips will help greatly and be much appreciated!

If you can get on the north side of Vail and hike in from Vail Stables there are some really nice Muleys in there. Not too much pressure since they closed the road to all motorized vehicles somewhat 5 years ago. Decently easy hike up. I'd wait till mid season because we are experiencing an extremely hot summer. The rut will more than likely be delayed due to that. Hope that helps!

Deer will be thinly distributed through those units during archery season. You'll likely need to cover gobs of country to find scattered deer. The hot, dry weather may make it a bit tougher...especially if there is a full moon. Once bucks loose their velvet they generally head into to trees where they hide out until the rut. All those units are OTC elk units so be ready for lots of company...especially once the rut starts.

We had the eagle's nest early rifle tag in 2016. There are some hammers in there. They live in places that are not easy to get to. Get in phenomenal shape.

Here's a couple we found scouting in late August for motivation - they were gone by the rifle opener.
