LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-18 AT 00:39AM (MST)[p]Wyoming seems to be producing some quality bucks this year. I have my own theory on why but I won't bore you with details. Here is a General season buck for your viewing pleasure. I was able to turn this buck up and after what I thought was a good evaluation, past him on to my hunting buddy. He made a play on him but wasn?t able to make it happen. The next morning found us closer to where we'd turned him up the night before but after a 9:30 AM and no sign of him or any other shooters we resorted to nap time. We both stired around 11:00 and looked at each other with the ?let's get the hell out of here look?. As I stood to gather my things and take a leak, I figured I might as well multi-task with the binos will I drained the half a pot of coffee from my bladder. Believe it or not I spotted a bedded buck mid-stream and could tell it was a buck buck nothing more. After a quick laugh, the spotters were once again at work. A few minutes went by and we could tell it was indeed the same buck from the night before and this time I had a feeling I probably should pull the trigger myself. I ranged him at 426 yards, doped my scope and settled in for nearly the exact distance I did most of my load development at. Needless to say I felt right at home taking the shot even while he was bedded. One shot was all that was needed. He didn't even get out of his bed.

My little boy wasn?t able to come on this trip but was a trooper and packed in just me and him, 6 miles the week before. He did great!

Nice Job Lieca!

I just wish I could have shared it with my son. We had a blast opening weekend when he did come though. We fished, chased a bear and I did my best to make every moment a teaching one.

A Good hunt and tons of memories with your son. Can't beat that hunt. A good buck is just a bonus.

That boys dad is a Big Muley slayer! Congrats on another great buck Leica.

Do you have an idea how old that buck is? His rack doesn't match that younger looking face.

Half Ace, I will be sending the jaw back to Robby Denning later this year. He ships them off to be aged. I wouldn't say, by the look of his teeth that he's over 4.5-5.5. Super deceiving to judge on the hoof though, his main frame is 187 and with his extras, he grosses 197 and change. I was having a hard time putting him north of 180 from 1800 yards.

Congratulations on a beautiful buck.

More importantly, congratulations in your work as a father. Your son will remember...

Very nicely done!

Congrats!
Nice couple of trips.
From the first pic I was thinking 190 ish, but I'm not very good at guessimating,
Thanks for posting the great pics.

The second look was worth it! Congrats on a nice deer.

Something tells me the young man can't wait to get out in the field with dad!

Great buck, story, and times with the little guy! Just dont put him on too big a buck too early... ha ha . We know there is always a bigger one out there! Thanks for sharing a great story and pics.

Great buck and better pics and story of you and your son. Thanks for not losing sight of what it is all about. Well done, Leica.

And someday I hope to hear your theory on why those big bucks are around. I have an idea as well.

My theory. I think lack of visibility from storms and wildfires have saved many big bucks the last 3 years in Wyoming. I don't think the winter kill was as advertised either. Let's be honest, our long range hunters and glassers lack the skill to hunt deer in a lot of curveball situations laid before them for the most part. I'd say 60-70% of hunters geared towards hunting ?high country? are crumbled mentally after a few days of weather and limited visibility. I think it all comes back to how many tools are in your backpack and mind. ~Learn from those who are successful~ Aaaand my secret weapon is a glassing chair, pro tip for ya lol but for real get one.

Thanks guys, I've been waiting for the day to come that I could introduce my boy to the world of hunting backcountry style. The weather was just too good not to make this the year. I'm sure there's a fine line between planting the seed and just flat out breaking a little guy. He?s already bugging the hell outta me about ?gunners safety? lol. If you ever have to make that decision to go after that smoker buck or take your 7 year old son.......just try both. I promise it?ll humble the hell out of you!!!
