I said almost

The two pics are of the same buck. The left side G4 is 13".

I had the chance to watch him and his 4 friends for several days before the season started. The 2nd biggest was about 27" wide with about 8" deep forks front and back. #3 was a little wider than #2 with bigger beams but was only a 3x4 with no browtines. #4 was a ridiculously wide 2x3 and the last buck a small 3x3. I kept coming back to the buck i took and saying "he s narrow but those fronts go on for days!" With the cool extra off right G4 and extras on back fork he was the one i wanted.

Opening morning i saw the group - minus the biggest buck. I figured he was up there with them where i couldnt see so i waited for them to bed, and move and bed the second time as they had each a.m. i had watched them. They were in a perfect spot to stalk up from the bottom with a huge boulder the size of a small house to conceal my approach. I got up there an hour later and scaled over the top to see #2 looking right at me from his bed 100 yds away. I thought i would have to shoot him if he bolted as i wasnt sure if they would blow the area and if i would get a 2nd chance at any of them. A minute or so later he put his head down and went to sleep!

I stood crouched in position to shoot when the wind shifted a bit (as evidenced by the dental floss dangling from my rifle sling) and i heard the clatter of hooves on high country rocks. The narrow buck appeared about 15 yds below me running straight away! I took several steps to my left down the boulder to create an angle and shot offhand as he crested a small hill 75 yds away - just before he was about to make it to safety out of sight. He bucked and kicked at the impact of the 180 grain Hornady SST from my .30 06 and disappeared before i could get a 2nd shot off. He ran about 30 yds out of sight and piled up.
