Max points for Wyoming?

Soooooo, yeah. I'm sitting on max points for deer in Wyoming as a non-resident (I know I know - no one has any business having max points for deer in Wyoming). I've had other things going on in years past so I've just been buying points. This year might be an ideal year for me to actually apply. I'm looking for opinions on what you would do as a non resident if you were going to apply in the Cowboy State. I have a couple of ideas in my head but would appreciate any ideas, opinions or suggestions.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-18 AT 08:37AM (MST)[p]There are several good options , but the best ones may take you years to draw even with max points. that's where I'm at. but even on these hunts your quality expectations have to be realistic. it's no secret the hard to draw late hunts are a ton of fun , I've hunted them twice and I'll hold my max points until I hunt one again. it is worth the wait in my opinion because of the quality of the hunt. the quality of the bucks however probably isn't worth the wait if that's your primary focus.

A look at the draw odds is a pretty good indication of how good the hunt is.

I also hear 128 is a dream hunt, was hoping to get there someday myself but somehow missed one year so I have one less than max now as a non res so have to adjust my wish list and am looking hard at unit 90. Sure wish I wouldn't have missed that year but best of luck to you.

I've hunted 128 twice and with max points I will again someday. it's a fantastic hunt I love the country and the experience. but honestly it's not what most guys think of as a trophy hunt. 170 is a realistic goal. very few bucks bigger than that are taken these days.

I would team up with founder, but wait a couple more years to do it. The deer herd in G is still suffering from the winter kill that hit a couple of years ago, and it will take another two or three years to develop a new crop of big bucks.

I been contemplating the same question for burning my max deer points that I know I will never have again. Right now 128 seems to be at the top of the list. Does anyone think the 82 late hunt will ever be brought back?

No, 82 late will never be brought back. Especially with the lower deer population there now, and the lack of food for this winter, the winter die off will be fairly high.
Add to that the migration path of some of the deer move through Colorado and get shot.....

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-18 AT 11:35AM (MST)[p]The real reason that the 82 late tag wont be brought back is because of outfitters and governors/commission tags.

The Wyoming residents have no desire to bring it back unless there are limitations, severe limitations, put on the use of governors/commission tags.

I agree with that 100%...its crazy that as many deer were killed with gov/com tags as they issued through the draw. That makes management of these types of hunts almost impossible...same thing with the late elk tags near Cody.

The area biologist would like to see it come back, but its not likely to happen.

I do understand the management reasoning behind eliminating that hunt. Its a shame though that us
"regular guys" who have earned and invested to have max points no longer have even that slim chance at what was probably the best deer hunt in the state. Just saying.

Personally, I really hope that hunt never comes back.

I think it is a waste of breeding age mule deer in a unit that is already hammered by hunters.

Thanks to everyone for the reply?s. I'll continue to fast and pray about this for answers! ?

If you enjoy seeing lots of deer you might consider 87. I don't think it is known for really big bucks but there are lots of bucks to look over.

So if a guy has say 9 pts (as of now), would he have 10 in the draw. What I mean is, looking at the data, it would say for example 50 % for 10 pts. Did that person have 9 or 10 pts prior to buying their stuff that year.

Wasnt sure about it and never bothered to look. You guys will get the info and already know the answer.

You do not gain a point the year you apply. If you have 9 when you apply you have 9.

Dean,

P.M. me when you get a chance, I am not always on this site but would like to ask you questions about your experience in 128.
I do check-in every now and then to the political forum. You and Jef are a hoot.

So do first year applicants with 0 points not even have a name in the hat?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-16-18 AT 04:12PM (MST)[p]They have an application in, but their preference point total is zero. There are lots of groups in the drawing odds that show number of people with 0 points.

Difference is a chance, versus number of points (tiered draw) plus chance. Once all the tags are gone in the PP draw, they don't look any further down. Then everyone goes into the random draw with the same single application.
