Can anyone give me some info on the Arizona Strip? I've never put in for any other state besides Utah so I'm just curious how Arizona's draw and points system works? When does it open for applications? I'm looking at either 13B or 13A units which one would be the best? What is the draw odds for non resident? What does a tag cost for non resident? I understand it will take some time to draw. Thanks in advance.

Realistically you may never draw a non-resident AZ strip tag in your lifetime unless you are sitting on something close 20 points already. Just too few tags and too many applicants.

The AZ application is quite expensive because you have to purchase a hunting license every year to apply. If you are not interested in other hunting in AZ it would be hard to justify the cost to apply just for the strip deer.

There are lots of other great hunting opportunities in AZ.

Odds are bad! You might want to just play the lottery with your non-refundable license fee every year and then buy a tag somewhere else.

13B is 0.01% with zero points.
13A is 0.04% with zero points.

I think 13A is the way to go! If you had 10 points, your odds in 13A would be 0.4 % according to:

Bad odds and high costs!

You need to buy a $160 license every year; pay $15 to apply every year; pay $15 for a bonus point every year; tag is $315.

Realistically, the only reason to apply for 13A or 13B with zero points is if you are willing to go for a lesser tag in the future because you will have to live a long time to get a tag!

Most of the non-residents in the current top pool (22 points) will die without drawing a 13B tag. I think more non-residents are still entering the top pool from -1 and taking hunter education than are leaving through drawing tags Death will start drawing more from the top pool as time goes on. I'm there with 22 points and thinking a second choice would be prudent as I approach 60. The only reason I might not is I that am considering AZ in retirement.

I thought I heard they where going to change the system ? By doing this Making everyone start off even. You have to buy a small game license to earn points in Arizona. I think its 105 bucks if I remember right.

They did change agsin a few years ago to cap the non-resident in the first preference round to 50% of the non-resident quota. So now, all non-residents have a small chance at all tags, regardless of points. I know of a non-resident who beat the 1:1000 draw odds 13B last year with no points and he got a beast. That change also doubles the time to clear points pools.

Elmer is spot on with everything he's posted. And like someone said it is still possible to beat the odds and draw a tag as an NR although VERY unlikely. We had a client this past year draw a tag first time applying for 13b as a NR and he harvested a 240+

It is expensive but there are lots of other opportunities to hunt in AZ with the License that you have to buy every year. We have guys that apply to try and ?win the lotto? on the strip then hunt left over coues tags and OTC archery deer. Just another option.

A couple things to add to what has been said. If you complete the AZ Hunter Safety course, you get a permanent point. If you apply for 5 consecutive years for the same species, you get a point. Once you've bought the $160 annual license, each species point is only $15.

Before the change was made a few years ago, all the NR tags (10%) were going in the first drawing (Bonus Round) to those with the highest points. So, only max points holders had a chance.

After the change, 5% (50% of the NR tags) go in the Bonus round to those with max points, and up to 5%, but not guaranteed, go in the next round (1-2 Pass). NR's and R's are all given a random number for each point they have. Lowest number wins. So, it is "possible" for a zero point NR to get a tag over a 20 point NR, or over a high point R. Again, unlikely, but possible.

I think I've got it right...
I'm a NR with 5 deer and elk points. Not holding out for a 13A/B though!

If I was just starting out with no pts AZ would be my last choice. If you want to start building pts for deer I would look at CO or NV. Way more quality mule deer tags in those 2 states that can be drawn a whole lot easier than a strip tag.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-18-18 AT 12:36PM (MST)[p]I know the question was regarding the Strip. However, keep in mind that there are other areas in Arizona that offer some darn good deer hunting that can be drawn with far less points than the Strip or the Kaibab.
