Wyoming Mule Deer and Antelope

Hey guys just wanted to say hi being that I just joined the forum. We have a forum pretty similar here in Washington state called hunting-Washington.net which has been very helpful for hunters and fishermen here. A little bit about myself I'm 35 years old, married for 10 years with two little girls and work for the Seattle Police department. I have hunted since I was 10 years old and I hunt up here for almost everything like elk, bear, pheasant, turkey, blacktail, whitetail and mule deer. I do lots of walleye fishing as well. I have been trying to venture out of state into Wyoming to do some mule deer and antelope hunting. I'm trying to figure out the whole Wyoming process and it's a lot of information to take in, but I'm looking for a little guidance if possible. I'm looking for some areas open to non-resident mule deer and antelope hunting in which I can camp or stay in a hotel and purchase some out of state tags over the counter. I have tried to look at the states maps and stuff but it's very overwhelming with the info. I'm not looking for anyone's honey holes but just an opportunity in a area for a hard working guy to get out and chase some antelope and mule deer. Any info would be super helpful and appreciated. God bless and thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum!!! Wyoming does not have any Over the counter tags for nonresident so you'll have to enter the draws or wait to see what's in the leftover draw, that being said there are some areas you can draw with 0 points for both deer and antelope, maybe difficult access but there is Hunter management and walk in areas you can hunt in some of those areas. I'd do some research on what areas you can draw with 0 and start planning. Good luck on your venture and hope all works out for ya after all Wyoming is a great state for hunting opportunities!!

Wy website is fairly easy to use. They have a hunt planner on their website. There are some decent areas you can draw with 0 points. Dig into it and if you get more specific areas seek about those and maybe guys will help. Welcome to the forum.

I've hunted WY several times as a NR. Maybe I can help you get started understanding it a little. Don't hold me to the exact numbers as these are just for example. I'll use mule deer as an example.

Wyoming is divided into individual game management units, say 150ish of them, say #1-150.

Several groups are combined into Regions. For example, Region J is comprised of GMU's 59, 60, 61, 64, 65. Many of the Region tags can be drawn with zero points, and you can hunt MOST of the GMU's in that region, and that region only.

SOME of the GMU's require points to draw a tag. In this example, you can hunt 59, 61, 64, 65 on a General Region J tag, but NOT 61.

Some of the Region tags also require points. You'll just have to study the reports to see which require points and which don't.

One thing WY allows that you might not be familiar with is point sharing. For example, if I have 10 points, and you have zero, we can apply together as a group and draw a 5 point tag.

It get's a little more complicated with the Special and Random draws, but here's a couple other links to get you started. Hopefully this all makes sense, and I got it right. But if I didn't, someone will let us know!! :D :D

There are a couple deer hunt areas where a nonresident (or resident) can purchase doe/fawn white-tailed deer permits over the counter. The number an individual can purchase is unlimited, HOWEVER the difficult part is finding a place to hunt those WT does, so I would not purchase a hand full of those licenses without finding a place to hunt first.

Nice write up. Good information here.

Hi, I'm also a longtime Hunt-WA member. I've hunted wyoming 3 times and this year did not get to hunt, but did put in a scouting trip. I got my feet wet on hunting here by purchasing over the counter leftover antelope tags. That process has changed since then however, now the leftover tags are offered in a second drawing. As others mentioned, look for easy to draw tags. The north central area has some easier to get antelope tags and Region E for deer is a fun hunt. For out of state hunting in wyoming as well as other states I'm not big on the hard to draw trophy units. I have fully embraced the hunt-now philosophy. I look for easy to draw tags between the species of deer, antelope, and elk. This method allows me to go out of state hunting every year.

Stay away from antelope 15, 16 and 24. Basically zero access to public land that holds antelope. Several other nearby units are far better and still 0 points.

As a fellow Washington hunter, I couldn't say it any better. We started with antelope in WY with 2nd draw units that were 100% draw and we ended up with 2 tags each. We didnt kill monster lopes, but we had a lot of fun. I will continue to hunt other states across the west especially with the piss poor management of the herds by WDFW. If you (OP) need any help, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.
