RUTTER

Hello All, First post! I am a whitetail bowhunter at heart. A buddy and I travel all over the midwest pursuing our passion. The last few years we traveled to North Central NE, the sandhill region, and ran into some Mule Deer. That all sparked an interest to chase these critters. We will be traveling to western SD again this coming fall to whitetail hunt, and decided to possibly travel to Eastern or Central WY for a Oct 1st or 15th opener Mule Deer rifle hunt.Any later than that starts to run into our whitetail rut hunts, and we will be drawing Iowa this year, along with hunting WI rut. We are from MI. One of my biggest questions is what type of habitat is best to look for when Cyber Scouting? What is a primary food source? Topographically, what to look for? Any help is much appreciated!!

Part of the challenge you face is getting a tag. Another hurdle is Mule Deer range from the farmlands to the mountain tops. The topography and habitat varies accordingly along with food sources. Cyber Scouting won't do much good if you don't know more specifics about where you are headed. And as I mentioned, first you have to draw a tag where you think you want to hunt.
Best of luck and welcome to Mule Deer 101.

Stay away from Jackson area. Apparently there is a "conservation" group up there who is lobbying to stop guys from MI from ruining "his spot"

What kind of land do you want to hunt? Alpine? Desert? Limit what you want first.

Be honest about what you want, and your capabilities. The high country in mid October can go from beautiful to dangerous in hours.

We have been looking at region b or region J. We have hunted the New Castle area for antelope twice in the last 6 years. We are in good physical condition, I've killed a mule deer in the High Country in Colorado several years ago, and we both killed mule deer in Nebraska in the sand hills. We have killed a few elk in Colorado also, but overall are not well-versed Western Hunters. From what I gather region B will be flattered, The Laramie Peak area in region J seemed interesting though also.
