Colorado unit 70

In doing some research it appears this unit offers some decent hunting. Does anyone have firsthand knowledge of this unit. It's a big unit and I need to drill down on an area.

Thanks

Trophy potential is down in the last few years. You will see lots of deer but hard pressed to find a wall hanger above 160 UNLESS you get a lot of snow. That happens maybe 1 in 4 years.

I've hunted there twice but both were 3rd season rifle. First around 2006 or 2007 can't remember exactly and it was simply an awesome hunt with deer numbers through the roof with some nice bucks. I went back in 2014 and deer numbers were way down and finding decent buck was very difficult. It was such a profound difference I couldn't believe I was in the same unit as before.
I guess this can describe a lot of mule deer area's but that was my experience. Haven't been back since so I'm not sure if it's come back or not.

There's a thread from last year on 70 vs 62(?) and there was a lot of first-hand info, including archery info from last year. Basically, not a real good unit. Depends on your expectations though.

Thanks for the information. I can relate to that. I was in Yellowstone in 2003 and there were elk everywhere . Went back in 2013 and saw 3 elk.

I probably need to call the local game office although I am a bit underwhelmed with the accuracy of what i have heard from the ones in Wyoming. I'm not sure most of them get out of their pickup and actually know very much.

Lots of archery choices in Colorado, I wouldn't be hunting 70 if it were me.

You have gotten some good intel, I would just take them as a joke and laugh about posts like this and go forward. Don't burn bridges when you are just getting started?

I've never archery hunted the unit, but have rifle hunted several times. Like what most have said, the numbers aren't even close to pass years. If you do decide on it, I would look high in the Lone Cone Peak walk-in area. There are always a few solid bucks taken, if you put the work in. You will also run into some Elk hunters to boot. It's still a fun hunt. A good friend has a nice cabin in the unit. We mostly Hunt UNIT 70, 71/711, all 3RD rifle season, and sometimes 4th season, mostly on private ranches.
PM me if you need some intel.
