So far, I have a Utah archery deer tag. That's it, but I'm hoping to have a tag for Wyoming and Colorado. We'll see.

The hunting I've done so far has been antler hunting in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. All the hiking has also been helping to keep my legs strong for my backpack trips this summer. Here are a few of the better shed antlers from this year.

Made my first trip to the high country! It felt good to throw the pack on my back and climb the mountain. It was a pretty hot scouting trip and the bugs were bad because there was little wind. But that's part of the deal.

I spent 3 morning a 2 evening looking for big bucks. The first morning I saw about 24 bucks....I think more than 12 were in the first group I ran into. It slowed down after that though. In all, I believe I looked at a bit more than 50 bucks on the trip. None appeared to be bucks I thought would end up a "taker". Just nothing special. That's just the way it is. I know that somewhere there are some "taker" bucks, but they are few and far between. Just takes time and lots of backpacking and hiking effort to find them.

Here's my video log of how the scouting trip went.

Another 3 days of scouting done! Well, 3 morning and 2 evenings. But who's counting?? ha ha
On this trip, I saw a lot of bucks. More than 110 different ones. But still no monsters. I did find one on this trip that I think is really interesting. Typical. I just think he still has some growing to do and will be a big one. He's the best I've seen of the 200_ bucks I've now looked at in Wyoming.

Got back up into the high country this week and this trip was much better than the previous 3 put together! Found a few bucks that are better than anything I've seen on previous outings. In total, I looked at about 65 bucks, bringing my total looked at in 12 days of scouting to about 270.
Covered a lot of ground on this trip and I was spent at the end. It was hot and the bugs were bad, but saw bucks that excited me, so all is good.
Watch the video..............

Another couple days on the mountain. Found a few good ones and one special buck. This best buck I found has double cheaters of each side. He's pretty cool.

Saw 33 bucks on this last trip. I have now looked at 300+ bucks in Wyoming.

Found a sweet buck that I'll be looking for in October. He's wide, great front forks, and did I say wide? I'm impressed with him.

Another scouting trip done. Found a wide 4x5 that has good mass and good tine length. I think he's the best I've found for the year. Also turned up some other pretty good ones.

3 more days in the high country. Found two cool cheater bucks. Looked at 110 bucks. Not many real big ones, but a few good ones. The two cheater bucks are the best trophies. I like the droptine buck a lot.

Another 3 days of scouting done. 80 more bucks. That brings my totals to 25 days and 590 bucks. On this most recent trip I found some good ones, but no real slugs.

Crappy luck for me! I return home after my last scouting trip with a little pain in my back, then last Thursday woke up with bad leg pain. Had an MRI a couple days ago and I have another herniated disc......same problem I had in 2009 right before the hunts. So, no Wyoming archery hunting for me. Still holding out hope that I can rifle hunt, even if it's while in pain.
What a kick in the butt!!!!

Man, I'm getting the bug to get back on the mountain. The pressure on my nerve has gotten a lot better the last 3 days. Been doing some serious stretching exercises and I think it's working. The doctor was wanting me under a knife ASAP, but I ain't doing that until all else has failed.
I'm feeling confident that my stretching is working. It would be awesome if that does it. I want to be on the mountain hunting. I'm sure my buck is just laying out there wondering where I am and why I'm not up there looking for him.

Well, I've been home for a few days now and just getting to updating my HAC thread here. The pain caused by my herniated disc has had me laid up and not doing a lot.

I hunted Wyoming for the first 7 days of the hunt, was there 8 days. I never did see either of the 190+ bucks that I know were in the area. The first day of the hunt there was some shooting and people. Day two there were a few other hunters, but as the hunt progressed, the hunters seemed to disappear. So, I certainly can't complain about crowding. But I still never could find either of those bucks. I think they were there, but just not showing themselves.

I did see a pretty big buck the day before leaving, but had to leave because of the pain and I was out of food. I had hoped things would heal up and I could get back after it, but no such luck. Pain only keeps getting worse, so I think my year of hunting is probably over.

Another year of no big buck for me, but I had fun scouting and a few clients I scouted for had success and that makes me feel pretty good.

I'm hunting! Had an epidural injection a few weeks ago and it's helped my pain, so I canceled surgery. So I'm on the mountain looking for the wide buck that has no brow tines pictured above.
I saw him right at dark the night before the hunt opened, but not yesterday morning. Lots of people yesterday, but not too many today. Hopefully I keep seeing fewer and fewer people.

Success definitely feels good. Here are some photos of the big buck and the video of my hunting adventure.

First found him during summer scouting (pictured above).

I got a look at this buck the night before the opener right at dark, so going into opening morning I was so excited knowing he was still alive and in the area.
On opening day, I didn't even see a buck all day, just other hunters.
On day 2, I saw a few of the smaller bucks in the area.
Morning of day 3, he was with the smaller bucks right where I had seen him during the summer. I moved to get a shot, passed on a 420 yard shot as I felt I could do better. I didn't want to wound or miss him. I scrambled to close the distance, but didn't see him again. I think other hunters bumped him.
Morning of day 4, I spotted him at first light and within 15 minutes he disappeared. I assumed he bedded there in the aspens where I last saw him and after some in-depth glassing with the spotter, I found him. I began trying to figure out how to get a good shot. It was raining, very windy and solid rest options were none existent. He got up and fed around after a while, then bedded again. After 7 hours of shuffling around, at 2:00, I had made my way across a small canyon and setup at 340/350 yards. I was able to lay down and get pretty solid. Just as I looked at him through the scope, he stood. I didn't have much time, but got the cross hairs centered between his shoulders and touched one off.
What a great moment! I'm still smiling.
