Larry Knipp's Arizona Governor's Tag Pronghorn.

He hunted with Eli and Tony Grimmett of Pronghorn Guide Service and Chad Smith of Vaquero Outfitters. Larry took the buck with a one shot kill on the 333rd day of a year long hunt.

The buck's preliminary measurements indicate that it may score around 94-inches. It sports 17-1/2-inch horns with 6-inch prongs and 7-3/4-inch bases.

What a toad. That side view says it all. Congrats to Larry and the crew for an incredible trophy.

When the tag holder shoots the buck in July is there a possibility that he could have added a little size or are they all but finished?

Most all the bucks are finished growing. At this point, any length they might add (maybe a 1/4-inch at most) will be countered by losing a little mass.

Eli,
It seems that the most of us here on MM aren't as good at judging goats as we would like to be. For example: this buck you killed in AZ or when you asked if there were 90 inch goats in Wyoming. Most of us, including me, said no. However, you have proven us wrong. What would you say is the reason why we are under estimating the scores? Do you find that most people can't judge mass? I'm just trying to decide why everyone is off on their guesses. Just wondered what your thoughts were.

That's a good question. I've given it some thought and I think I have a couple reasons. I guess mis-judging the mass is part of it, but on a much larger scale I think it's just that most hunters haven't seen enough bucks alive and then dead.

We've had the fortune to take photos and videos and guess the scores of these bucks and then find out how big a lot of them actually are - over 400 times. It would be nearly impossible for most hunters who aren't guides or outfitters to ever amass that kind of database and it really helps.

Also, another thing I think is happening, is that most hunters haven't seen very many - if any - 90-inch bucks alive. Without having any frame of reference for what one would look like alive it's difficult to put that big of a number on one when field judging.

Having guided to many bucks of that caliber it's a lot easier for us to say to ourselves, "Hey, this buck looks just like that other 90-incher we killed a few years ago" which would give us a good indication that "this" buck might be a 90-inch buck also.

I'm sure there are a lot of other factors at play within each individual and there bias toward judging, but that's kind of what I think is happening.
