Utah "Devil" Desert Bighorn Ram

Enjoyed my Devil sheep hunt. Truly a Once in a lifetime hunt!Came out with a better ram than I expected for DIY. Proof that spending ample time all summer and during the hunt even early while hot can result in outstanding results. I am not much for typing so please don't expect a novel about the hunt. The ram was hard earned and zero regrets in the end. Hope you all enjoy the photos.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-15 AT 09:55PM (MST)[p]Well Done Bluejay!!
That is an outstanding trophy and he's definitely as unique as Desert bighorns get. It's also cool you were able to find such a ram through your hard work. Many just don't have the patience.
My son and I were down there last week, apparently in the same general area. I'm curious when you took him. We only saw 3 rams and they were on the move with no ewe bunches, so I know it was probably a tough go.
You obviously made it a real adventure. That's very cool...exactly how an OIAL hunt should be.

Congratulations my friend!

RE: Utah "Devil" Desert Bighorn Ram

Congrats on a very interesting looking ram. How much damage was done to the jaw from the horn growing that way. Ive seen a couple like him but they were both dall sheep.

LBH,
Thanks. I harvested on Oct 30th. I got to know a large part of the unit intimately in my travels. It's truly magical area, my close proximity to the unit helped in me spending endless days exploring the depths of the devil. I will be present in the unit in years to come during rut time. It is my home away from home. The sheep bug hath struck me. The desert sheep unit out my back door (potash) is no comparison in adventure to the devil. Probably at a result of already knowing the potash area. The potash has been my stomping grounds all my life. So exploring the devil heightened my overall experience of the hunt. Still a lifetime worth of adventures to be had.

bluejay,
That country has an allure that seems to be intoxicating. Since my son's hunt in 09 we have returned on our own almost every year. It sounds like you have been hooked as well. I'd love to hear a bit more of your experience. Perhaps you can PM me.
Also, the Utah FNAWS banquet is being held on December 12th at the Provo Marriott Conference Center. There are hundreds of us with sheep fever who will attend and we would love to see those horns in person. Many other successful hunters will also be bringing their sheep horns as well and it's always a fun evening. It would be awesome if you could make it!
Congrats again.

Congrats on such a awesome unique ram...looks like he suffered from sinus itus (sp)...I mounted a ram with the same problem that came from the new Foundland herd last year ...a few pics...

Here is a pic of the core before I put him back together..

Interesting how the damaged horn in both these sheep is much larger than the right horn...

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-15 AT 07:55AM (MST)[p]I believe the Newfy ram was a hermit, mostly hanging out by himself. I am curious if a ram with that kind of issue avoids rutting?
It appears that one hard butt would make such a ram into a "unihorn".

Interesting stuff for sure. Thanks for the photos BLT!

RE: Utah "Devil" Desert Bighorn Ram

Way to get in there an make it happen! Very rewarding. Great ram.

BLT
Thanks for sharing the pics of the newfy ram. It gives some insight to how my rams skull might look. Is the newfy unit rocky sheep? I'm not familiar with the area.

Thanks again everyone for your comments. I am still floating around in the clouds high from harvesting this ram. Still amazes me it was my turn for a ram.

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

RE: Utah "Devil" Desert Bighorn Ram

First of all, Congrats on the great ram. You were probably as shocked as I was to see such a unique horn configuration on a ram.
Were you able to see him at all prior to the hunt during your scouting?

If you are ever up at the Sportmans Warehouse in Logan, there is a ram there that had the same horn formation, however it doesn't quite come down to the cheek like mine and into the cheek yours.

It is a California Bighorn herd(Utah just lumps them in with Rockys) on the Newfoundlands. They are a transplant herd started from the sheep on Antelope Island. The ram I shot out there was 12.5 years old.
Again, Congrats.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-15 AT 12:02PM (MST)[p]Tmas,
Thanks for the input and kind words.
I never did see this ram prior to harvesting him. Had I, I would have been hunting him hard. I am a sucker for odd growth in all antlered game and horned game. The stranger the better for me. This ram filled all the boxes on my bucket list for a desert ram.

Thank you for the insight into the newfy unit. I am curious about the unit. It must encompass a fairly small area.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

RE: Utah "Devil" Desert Bighorn Ram

That is the coolest Ram I have ever seen. Congrats on getting that cool ram. unreal how he survived and ate.
