Left or Right, and are they big enough?

Big enough for what? not big enough for the book. but the ear tag is a pretty good indicator the book is not a consideration anyway.

Nice young bulls. the one on the left looks bigger and maybe a year older. in the picture anyway.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-16 AT 08:20AM (MST)[p]Is this a picture of Antelope Island Bison? Is this why the one has a ear tag ? I think they have them classified by there tags . Does anyone remember what color means what? I was trying to remember . I was thinking a green tag was a breeding bull and a red tag was a old non breeding bull ?

This picture was taken last Sunday on the Book Cliffs wild horse bench unit. I have a tag and had that bull on the left in the crosshairs and he started to move off and I never shot. I was questioning my choice to pass on this bull but after hearing that others think he may be a bit young, I am glad I waited. I guess I need to see more bulls to be a better judge of size. He was the biggest of the group of five bulls, as soon as he started to move the other bulls lined up right behind him as he led the way, it was very cool to watch.

They work and tag free range bison in UT ? didn't know that.

I hunted Custer Park and took a B&C bull a couple years ago, from seeing so many bulls with probably the best judge in the world I learned quite a bit about them and how to judge them. the thing about judging them I learned the best was they're very difficult to judge.

I don't know how many 8+ age bulls there are in your area but if you see one you'll know it. they just look more mature and rougher. look for mass in the horn you get 4 measurements , length is less important since you only get 1.

Good luck.

They tag the Antelope island herd and give them shots . They herd them up once a year. They Book cliffs Bison where transplanted from the Henry's and the Ute tribe herds. I know they collared several of them before releasing. Not sure if they ear tagged them ? Or maybe the Ute tribe does on there herd. I was trying to learn how to judge them on my hunt this year. It is tough in the field. That"s why I had my buddy Taylor with me. What I have learned is over 25" wide is a good bull. Over 30" wide is a great bull. The heavier the better and if they carry the mass up the horn. The older bulls have there hips sticking out and are just bigger all together. Good luck they are all brown and big. :)

As others have pointed out the left bull is bigger. I think the one on the right is a 4 year old and the one on the left is likely 2 years older. He is quite a bit bigger in body than the other one. I drew a Henry's cow tag in 2012 and have had a serious bug for bison since. Hopefully somewhere someday I'll get to hunt one of the old wooly bulls with horns that are heavily broomed and thicker than my neck.
