Hey guys,
The day I've been waiting for is almost here. Heading down to White Sands Missile Range here in NM on Tuesday for the opener on Wednesday for my desert sheep hunt! It seems like yesterday when we found out the draw results and at the same time, it's taken FOREVER for it to get here. We did a scouting trip back at the end of July (gotta love the security part of hunting on the range) and saw a few pretty decent rams. They did a helo survey at the end of October and Gilbert said the sheep are spread out more than usual. That's OK, since I hired a guide friend of mine and he's got mules and they'll come in real handy for San Andres and Onate/Gardner Peaks. We're having a safety meeting Tuesday evening and will find out then what area we're being assigned to. 4 hunters this year (two resident and 2 non-res).
I've been fretting over everything this weekend to make sure I haven't forgotten anything (yes, my tag was in my wallet after I checked for the hundredth time lol!) Rifle is sighted in (Tikka T3 .300WSM, Winchester Supreme 180 Accubonds, Zeiss 4.5-14x44 Rapid Z800) and the trailer is loaded up and ready to go.
I know this is a SPECIAL tag and I've been doing my best to make sure the thought of that doesn't come crashing down on me. I've actually got my fingers crossed it turns out to be a "normal" hunt and I'm able to think back and say "holy crap, did that just happen?"
I'll keep you guys up to date and hope to be sharing a photo or two soon! I still can't believe this is actually happening!
