I was fortunate enough to draw Rocky Mt. Bighorn tag for NM's Rio Grande Gorge. I am way beyond excited. I have had a permanent smile and can't stop thinking about them. August 15th cannot get here quick enough.

Now I am seeking advice and knowledge for this hunt. I have never done this kind of hunting. I am a Soldier stationed at White Sands Missile Range and born/raised on the east coast. So, my background is mostly hunting whitetail deer.

If anyone has info/knowledge/advice that they believe would be useful, by all means send it my way.

Thanks everyone, and happy hunting this season.

Congrats BigDaddyL!
I am sending you a PM with a phone number of a guy in NM you should contact.
He is an all out sheep hunter and should be able to help.
Best of luck

Hi there. Congrats on the tag again. Have ya been up to scout or anything? I just like hearing about Rams and updates on them.

I haven't been out yet to scout. I plan on spending a few days over the weekend prior the the 4th of July. I am looking forward to it.

Do you or anybody else know a close and good place to park a large self sustaining camper while up there scouting?

There are some camping/RV facilities within the Rio Grande National Preserve itself at Pilar and all along the Rio Grande River. You will also be within spitting distance of the southern end of your hunting unit,
You can also do some fishing on the Rio Grande right outside you RV door if you prefer however, scouting is obviously first and foremost.

**Scouting report**

I spent 2 1/2 days scouting the Gorge and found several Sheep. Saw a group of 9 ewes with 4 little ones. Saw a group of 6 young rams, a group of 15 with 12 young rams, 2 good size rams, and 1 huge ram. Then I saw a group with 20+ rams and it had 2 good size rams and 2 huge rams. Was a good trip. I am pumped to go after them soon. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and help. I also had the pleasure meeting a fellow MM forum member and he showed me some good spots. I really appreciate and like how we can help each other out especially on these rare hunts.

Sounds like you're dialing them in! Keep me posted on how things are going. I hope you tag a giant!

Glad to hear your scouting went well. You should have no trouble finding the ram you want. Did you find the RV camping areas along the Pilar National Momumemt and Rio Gramde corridor satisfactory for your needs you inquired about in a previous post?
Good luck. Fun hunt.

I did find a spot to camp. Thanks for the help. The camp host was a little unsure that I could get my rig parked successfully, but I had no problem and he was impressed. Really looking forward to going after one of the 180+ Rams we found here in about a month.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-17 AT 01:52AM (MST)[p]Your luck scouting for your bighorn is going better than mine. I'm 4 scouting days in on my desert bighorn without any luck so far.

Hell, we found bighorn in your area and we weren't even looking for them.

Here's a few fellas right off the bridge:
