My Dad just found out he's an alternate for a Henry Mountain late cow Bison hunt. I would love to hear any news or information about this hunt.
My dad is 70 years old and can get around okay. I'm curious what some of your thoughts are with this tag? I've never been on the Henry's but have heard great things about the Deer and Bison hunts.
-What to expect?
-How difficult is this hunt?
-is access a problem?
-is it realistic to think he could shoot one from the road.
-outfitters or others that could help to pack out game? (For a price in sure)
I've been doing my homework and know it's not an easy hunt. The success % looks good and the time in the field is around four days. Would love any help!!!

I think Taylor Albrecht is the best guide on the Henrys for Bison. He can help you be successful. If you don't want a full on guide like Taylor. Jayden Brain from Loa does offer a pack out service. He has a company called Bull mountain outfitters. Those late cow hunts can be tough. Depending on the weather and if the herd gets pushed down into the closed road area. Walking or on horse back is the best way down and back. Of that area. We will be down there with Taylor on November 18th with my 80 year old dads hunt. If you can get down there. Drive the roads and experience the Henrys Mountains. It is a special place for sure.

It is a hard hunt!
Some guys get lucky and catch them on top,but most are pushed into remote areas.
Wish you the very best.

My brother had the tag in 2012. I had heard from many people this hunt can be really hard and I was extremely stressed before the hunt even happened. That said, we shot a cow opening day 150 yards off the road. They are where you find them

I had this tag in 2012 when it first was created. Got the call mid November, had never set foot on the mountain, and was in school full time and working 60 hrs/week with a pregnant wife. Needless to say, I knew I needed help! I went with High Top Outfitters and was paired up with Brett Guymon--great guy and awesome guide. HTO was very reasonably priced and had horses, atvs and snowmobiles available to use if needed. I wasn't able to hunt until the last 5 days of the season, and ended up shooting my cow on my first morning and we found a usable road 30 yards from where she dropped. We definitely got lucky!

I know several other people who have hunted for the entire 2 weeks of that season and were unable to ever get a shot off. Sometimes that is due to weather shutting you out of the productive areas, sometimes it is an issue of driving around too fast and not looking.

I will say that Taylor Albrecht is very good at getting on the bison on the Henry's. Very good. Great guy, and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him or HTO for the hunt.

This can be indeed a tough hunt. I hunted the Henry's with my dad back in 2000. We had over a foot of snow to drive and hike through the first weekend. We only saw one buffalo after we tracked him for 2 miles. He ran before we spotted him and he didn't stop.

We got some intel from some locals in town (Hanksville) and tried a new spot as we heard that the buffalo moved off the mountain into some finger draws closer to water (it was a drought year in 2000). The second weekend, we were fortunate to spot a group and my dad was able to harvest one. It was about 2 miles from the nearest dirt road.

It was a fun hunt, but I would recommend a guide if you want to increase your odds of success.
