Dagestan Tur and Bezoer Ibex for 2018

I've got a few bucket list hunts coming up this next year. I'm going to Turkey end of January to first of February to hunt Bezoer Ibex. I'm also headed to Azerbijian to hunt Dagestan Tur. Mid summer.

I'm up for any suggestions anybody has to offer for either hunt. My questions are as follows.

Turkey: I was supposed to go in December but my daughter decided to get married so I'm going later in the season probably won't be hunting until February. From those who have gone before is this still a good time to be hunting. I know it's past the rut and the mountains may have a lot of snow. The outfitter, Shikar Safaris says it's still good hunting and the Ibex move down. Personally I love mountain hunting but I'll accept hunting lower if there's as good of a chance at a good representative of the species.

Azerbijian: Going there with Mirbala Manafov. I've hunted with him once and he has a good reputation. We are going the the Sheki region. I'm not really sure what to expect. But after hunting Kyrgyzstan with Mirbala he got me excited to give it a shot.

For both hunts I'm wondering what everybody knows about the current landscape of traveling with a rifle. Is there any specific countries to avoid I'm curious about going through Moscow, Russia and possibly Amsterdam, Netherlands. Also maybe Paris France. I think if I need to I'll avoid anywhere but if these are ok in have so many miles on delta I can go delta one first class for free for both hunts.

I have not done either hunt but I'll suppose you've checked into the "travel ban" in Turkey. I have no idea if it's going to affect you or not but if you've not checked, now's the time to do so.

Best of luck...and text pics!

Mirbala has a very good reputation. A friend of mine hunted with him for Tur in the Sheki region a few years ago and was pleased with the hunt. I will be hunting Tur in May near Sheki, but with a different outfitter.

I would not fly through Moscow. It can be a problem. The cost is usually more and you may need a temporary visa. I suggest flying to Istanbul on Turkish Air. That is who I usually use. From Istanbul it is an easy flight to Azerbijian.

I was just hunting Marco Polo in Tajikistan and flew through Istanbul. No problem at all. I did not take a gun with me because of the additional cost for permits. But many others do and do not have a problem. I would avoid Amsterdam because I have heard it is a problem if you have a layover when traveling with a gun.

First off the travel ban does effect me. The outfitter swears that it will pass and the the current news out of Istanbul supports that. It's beyond my control for now I'll continue with my plans if I fail to get a visa I'll postpone. This hunt is all paid for but they will let me postpone a year if necessary. I would rather get it done so I don't interfere with plans for next winter. But this was another reason for me to try to use my Delta miles. I can plan on this Feb if I end up not getting a visa I can cancel up to 3 days before I go and get the miles back. Last year I booked through Istanbul on Turkish and will likely just go JFK direct to Istanbul.

Second I believe for Azerbijian I will either go Turkish Airlines through Istanbul or Azerbijian Airlines direct from JFK. Those miles are so tempting to use but I think that you guys are right should probably be more concerned with my layovers on a place I'll get my rifle through. I'm just not familiar with travel through the counties I mentioned earlier.

But dang not paying 4-5 k for first class would be nice. For that price I'll be in the back of the plane packed like a sardine.

Super hunts. As for traveling with guns, your outfitters should be up on procedures.

Also, contact Steve Turner, Travel with Guns, a travel agent that has booked many flights to Asia and is well up on travel requirements.

Good luck, safe travels

Hey there. Sorry I just saw your PM. PM system on here is horrible. Anyways I just shot you a reply!

Turkey - I think you'll have a good hunt even with the later dates. I went in December and it was still pretty warm. Would've been great to go about a month later. So maybe you'll hit it just right. I think when the snow piles up, they come down quite a bit lower. With no snow, we had to climb to the top every day. That got a little tough day after day.

Tur - I think you'll have a great hunt. I'd go again with Mirbala any time. If you get a chance and he's available try and hunt with Asiman. He's the man! Love that guy.

Thanks for the response. As for Turkey it's a done deal now I have my visa and I'm headed out in a couple weeks. I decided to fly from JFK direct to Istanbul on Turkish. I would have loved to use my Delta status for upgrades and stuff but I agree Turkish is the way to go. I'm not sure how the weather has been this year in Turkey but they have assured me it's a great time to hunt so I will see

I'm also very excited for the Tur hunt I'll see Mirbala at GSCO just before I head to Turkey I'll ask who I will be with.
