Hi all,
I live in Iowa and am looking to try and draw a tag for gun, any-sex this fall. I am likely coming with at least one partner, so would be drawing as a group if possible. I have never done a draw for any hunts and have no preference points built up, but I think I have an idea of what to do there after reading your other posts. I wanted to see if I can get some advice on a couple of zones. We will be going after bucks and will probably need to hunt public lands. Do Zones, 8, 9, 11, or 29 offer decent access? Should I be looking elsewhere? I hoped to stay in that vicinity due to my direction of travel, coming through Nebraska, and to keep my trip a little shorter, but if it's a waste, I don't want to limit our opportunities too much. Any help is appreciated!

We have hunted those units and had success on public land. It will be frustrating as many antelope you can see and not hunt. But it is still a fun time. Just remember to enjoy the hunt. We have had limited success asking for permission. You will drive a lot to look at the parcels of accessible land. Remember to hike to where you can see the far corner of every piece of public land (there aren't that many), it only takes one herd and you can have success. We avoid opening weekend and try to hunt mid week. Good luck

Thanks for the responses. Glad to finally be getting this going. One additional question... I planned on buying a preference point and since I'm not sure if I will even be out to hunt again, I figured it would be wise to use it and increase my odds. Does that make sense or am I forgetting something?

Thank you BigChief, I was just coming on here to admit my misunderstanding. The BLM lady was nice enough to educate me on that one just a few minutes ago. To answer your question, I have none, and will have one for 2019. I swear, I've been doing my homework, but the draw thing is just new to me. Thanks for your help!

Just be careful applying for "difficult access" units. You could get stuck with a tag and no place to hunt.

You can have success getting a license & a good hunt & get an an antelope buck plus experience too. Antelope hunting is a lot of fun- my favorite game overall. I've hunted Wyoming antelope many times & many years & lots of different units too. I'll be glad to help you navigate the process-- it's really not difficult once you know a few basics about the system . A must is to get a Preference Point this year to use next year-- opens up more units/options next year.
