Just curious if any body has hunted lions on the Oquirrh-Stansbury unit and how the hunt went. I was looking at the drawing odds and saw how many points it takes and was curious if its worth it and some big toms are being harvested.

I've ran dogs on the Oquirrh-Stansbury unit quite a bit. I think the only reason the draw odds are so bad on that unit is because it's so close to salt lake, tooele, lehi etc. Not many lions left and very few nice toms. I personally wouldn't waste my points on it, there are even a lot of harvest objective units that are better. It used to be pretty good but has taken a big decline for overall lion numbers the last few years.

That's a first. The only thing I hear about is how many lions there is on the Range.I have personally seen a few each year on both ranges. That's just seeing them by chance not actually looking for them. A friend of mine had a tag last year and she ended up passing a few lions and took a nice tom. I don't run dogs so I am just calling it as I see it.

jarheadhunter, I guess what people call a nice lion can vary greatly. For me, I did not see anything come off the oquirrhs worth all of those years of bonus points.

I hunt that unit occasionally and I will make you a deal, I'll give you $50 bucks everytime you can show me a runnable lion track I can turn out on. Trust me, I'll be money ahead on gas alone.

It used to be pretty good out there but now its just the same handful of lions getting caught over and over and there really aint that many out there.

There are still good lions on the unit, but it gets a lot of pressure. My cousin runs his dogs on the unit quite a bit, has been sending me texts of a big tom he has been chasing. When the snow hits the ground, he leaves his house at 3 am or earlier, just because so many people are out there running dogs. Finds a track and just sits and waits.

Thanks guys I was just curious. I know way back in the day when I started collecting points I knew a guy that ran hounds on that range and he allways talked about the big toms he would tree. Now that was 13 years ago, and I wondered if it was still that good for the points.

Very true mgd I guess just because I or my hunting partners see a lion doesn't make it a trophy tom that anyone would want to go after.

No that is completely not true. if you say there aren't big toms out there and not a lot of lions you don't hunt there enough. They are there just have to know where to look. There are plenty of them, but just like any species, anywhere in the entire country the bigs ones don't live in every canyon. If you have the points get the tag, just make sure you go with someone local who is familiar with the population. Enough said.
