Rifle or shotgun

I have the hardest time knowing which gun to have in my hands and how to go about setting up with both. I am not the most experienced coyote caller, but have been having some luck and I am sure with more experience I may be able to answer this on my own...or maybe there is no answer.

When I take both guns, I always have the wrong one in my hands.

When I only take the rifle, I have one run me over at 20 yards, never stopping, and I can't get him. Seems like everytime I don't take the shotgun, I regret it. When I do take it I get a great standing still 100 yard shot, but its a big move to set down the shotgun and pick up the rifle.

Part of me is ready to give up on the shotgun and just get better at close moving shots with the rifle, but it is pretty fun to get them with the shotgun.

What are your thoughts?

I would say every set is unique. In open spaces where I can see good I stop em at 100 yards just barking like a pissed dog with my mouth and shoot em the closer they get their odds go up things happen way fast when their close. Tighter cover I always have the shotgun cuz its likley to happen fast and a shotgun is your best option. I know this may sound stupid but take a day and scout out your calling locations before you call em and weigh all of it. Ive had a bit more success doing that especially in areas I havent hunted much. Good luck.

Dang,

I like to hunt with a partner for those situations. One armed with the scattergun, the other with a rifle.

Well said Idcurs,

i been with guys that carry 2 rifles, but if you are hiking in ways it gets old carrying 2 guns

One of the guys I yote hunt with ordered a 10 ga with xtra full choke and hand loads 3 1/2" OO bucks I have witnessed him roll running yotes a little over 100 yds. it's deadly and by the looks of it I think it kicks a little.

I use a rifle 100% of the time. We called 17 coyotes this last weekend and only 2 of those were 'drive-bys' is what I like to call them (when they run in and run out). We shot one of them as he was running out and the other one got away. I think it would be great to carry 2 guns to stand but I don't like to carry a lot and a rifle fits the bill. I think just improving your accuracy and effectiveness with the firearm you do carry it probably more important...
