New Mexico Black Bear Hunt

I was blessed with taking this color phased black bear at 213 yards with my Remington 700ADL .308 Win. using Hornady Superperformance 165gr GMX. I hit him in his right shoulder and the round tore through his chest and exited his left shoulder. He dropped immediately and bled out within a few minutes.

This was my first 'real' hunt, having only hunted for feral pigs in Texas prior. The terrain was extremely rugged and demanding. I found out the good and the bad about the gear I chose to take and also learned that there is no more emotionally and spiritually moving experience than hunting and taking an animal in its element.

I had the great privilege to hunt New Mexico black bear with Andres Martinez (not pictured) back in August of 2012. Andres is a great friend and his intimate knowledge of the area and innate ability to sense animals in their environment resulted in me and the other men with me all filling our tags within three days.

You will be hard pressed to find a more ethical and honest hunter and guide. His physical conditioning is amazing, but he is understanding of any disabilities one may have and will pace the hunt accordingly. Whether you are bow or gun hunting bear, elk, mule deer, or sheep, I personally believe your chances of getting a shot at the animal are high if you are hunting with Andres. He saw every bear before anyone else in our hunting party spotted them.

While we did not have to hire Andres to guide for us (he helped us out for free because we are friends), I would highly recommend anyone looking for a hired guide to consider Andres Martinez. He can be contacted by email: [email protected]
