Montana Bear Advice

I really want to do a DIY S&S bear hunt in Montana this spring. I have never been bear hunting so I could use some suggestions. I am planning on going up near Libby Montana. I am going to walk or ride a pedal bike on old closed logging roads and look for bears. Other than that I don't have a plan? Are there places to camp that time of year close to where I will be hunting? Do I stay in a hotel? What is the best time of year? Will I be dealing with snow? Where is there a good concentration of bears? I know this is a lot of questions but I really want to make this happen. I would appreciate any advice from all you bear experts out there. Thanks in advance

There are plenty of forest service and state campgrounds around Libby if you didn't want to spring for a motel. Gated logging roads is your best bet and there is no shortage of bears. Be sure to thoroughly check clear cuts as well. If you don't see any bear sign on the roads, find a different one. I would personally wait until the second week of May before I got serious about anything. Snow should be gone by then and clover will be growing good on the roads. I primarily hunt the evenings as that is when I find most bear movement. I generally walk my bike in ( I've jumped them off the road riding in) and ride out in the dark. Makes getting back to the truck much quicker. Can also walk a dead bear out by putting the bear on the bike.
