Awesome morning! 5 coyotes down!

Had a great morning a few weeks ago! After working out of state for the last 5 months I was itching to break out the calls again. Headed up to a spot that usually produces a couple this time of year. 1st stand at about the 4 minute mark had a double circling 100 yards out from the decoy. I put the crosshairs on the first and dropped him and never saw the 2nd again. Kept calling and at about the 7 minute mark had a hard charger that I stopped 5 yards from the decoy with a shot from my 6x68. Kept on calling and about 2 minutes later had one sneak in from upwind of the decoy and dropped it about 10 yards from the decoy. I was pretty excited at that point but kept calling. I decided to pull up my binos to see if I could spot any checking out the carnage from a distance when I caught movement by the decoy again. It was a 5th coyote responding to the call. It was on the retreat as I'm sure it smelled my scent at the decoy. I raised my rifle, got the crosshairs on him and was about the bark to get him to stop when he turned around about 25 yards out from the decoy and started barking up a fit. He must have been mad to see all his buddies laying around the decoy... ;) One more shot and I had my 4th coyote down on the 1st stand of the day!

2nd stand was a blank
3rd stand I called in a pair from almost a mile away. The male came in first and I dropped him at 40 yards. About 5 minutes later his mate finally crept in but sat down at a distance and I let one sail to her as she trotted off only to send her into hyperdrive.

Overall one of my best solo trips to date and my first quad on a single stand!

Nice. When you say 4 minutes in or 7 minutes in, are you or your machine making noise the whole time? Or is that 7 minutes of waiting after making noise?

What decoy is that? Do you think they give you success that you wouldn't normally get? How long after you get the decoy up do you start calling?

I have my fair share of succes, I just think I get stuck in ruts sometimes. Thanks and congrats.

I was using an e-caller and handcalls.

The decoy used was the Mojo Super Critter. I think it's probably the best decoy on the market. I've used decoys off and on and think that most of the time it does exactly what it should. Which is keep the attention of the coyote away from me. I've had them stop and stare at it which works great for taking a shot and I've also had them about run it over which is just dang fun to watch. I've had a few times where they see it and they turn and walk/run away but that's pretty rare. If you are thinking about getting a decoy, it won't make you call in more coyotes. But it will hold their attention.

And as far as how long I start calling after I set the decoy out... I start calling once my but hits the ground. I don't believe in wasting time to let things 'calm down' before I start calling. If a coyote has already seen me then he probably won't come in. If a coyote has heard me but hasn't seen me he's probably going to head my direction when he hears the distress sounds.

>tell me more about the 6x68.

The 6x68 is a 6.8spc necked down to a 6mm. It's pretty similar to the 6mm DTI and the 6mm WOA. The 6x68 is a straight neck down of 6.8 brass. 6mm DTI is an improved version of the 6X68 Water capacity is 36 grains. The 6mm WOA groups in with this one as well. It too has a 30 degree shoulder but is made by pushing back to form it. In doing this some case capacity is lost from the case's original form. It is proprietary and requires fire forming and a set of custom dies.

I'm shooting a 58 grain vmax at around 3200 fps. I've had the gun for almost a year and think it's a great round for coyotes. I've shot 13 coyotes with it I have yet to have one run after being hit. It opens them up a but sometimes but I'd rather have a dead coyote that I can find rather then one I have to search for.
