Big Badger down

Took my son hunting with me for the first time this year. We were at my buddies ranch in Montana. We were taking a break from deer hunting and my son really wanted to hunt coyotes. So we set up next to a prairie dog town where we seen two coyotes the day before. We set up on a little hill and put the FOXPRO about 40 yards away and started with the lightning jack sound.

After about 10 minutes my son looks to his side and said " What the heck is that?". I look over and I see a badger standing on a dirt mound looking for the sound.

I get super pumped. I have been hunting in Montana over 12 years and have never seen a badger. I take the gun from my son to shoot him. Then I think that I brought my son here to learn to hunt and this would be awesome for him. So I calm down and give him the gun back. Take out the range finder and he is 120 yards away. I probably said please don't miss 10 times. He gets set and shoots. I hear a thump and the badger disappears. I let out a yell I'm so proud. He has a smile 10 miles wide.

We give it a minute and walk over. I am carrying the gun. and have him about 10 yards behind me. I can't see the badger and I know they are nasty suckers. I get to the hole and about a foot down all i see are teeth and claws. I try and find a stick to poke it but there are no trees for a mile around. I poke him with the rifle a couple times and he is dead. I'm still scared to stick my hand down this hole and gram it. Hope there is not another one down there. or somehow this thing is not really dead. I finally stick my hand down there and pull out a beautiful badger. Perfect shot in the neck. No pass threw shot and no damage to the fur at all. old badger about 25-30 pounds.

At this time I thing I'm the happiest dad in the world. Took it to the taxidermist and getting a full mount done for him.

Congratulations, that sucker is HUGE and furred up real nice. you will get a nice skull trophy as well as a cool mount. I called in a small one ( it looks like a baby compared to yours!) with my FoxPro two winters ago in the snow and blasted him with my Shotgun.

Heck yeah! Way to let the little man shoot it!

I was road hunting with my wife a few years ago, and noticed some commotion down in the barrow pit, well out pops a skunk, with an enormous badger hot on it's heals! They came up on to the road running full bore, that badger wanted him some skunk for dinner. I jump out, grab my 300 win mag, and my wife asks "what in the hell are you going to do?" I said, "I'm going to shoot that damn badger woman!" (chicks just don't get it) Anyhow, make the shot, tried to get the skunk too, but he got away. So I grab the badger and the smell is just overwhelming. You can imagine what was happening to him as he was chasing that skunk all over. So, I throw the badger in the back of the truck, jump in and head for home. By now, my wife is gagging and dry heaving. I'm trying to keep the truck on the road, but between laughing and the stinging in my eyes it's getting hard. Well, we get home and I triple bag the badger to contain the smell and call my taxidermist. Well, wouldn't you know it? He's not around, says to put the thing in the freezer. So, I did as I was told.

About a week goes by and my wife goes to get something out of the freezer and all I hear is her screaming bloody murder. Apparently, the triple bag method wasn't sufficient to contain the skunk/badger smell. Not only did the triple bag not contain it, but almost everything in the freezer absorbed it! Oh, yeah, skunk flavored bread and biscuits. 8 boxes of baking soda and a couple weeks the smell was pretty well gone.

So, moral of the story is, don't put that badger in the freezer!

That's totally awesome, and something he will never forget!

Mine is at my taxidermist now.

They are beautiful.

Very nice badger, they are worth some good money this year with the fur buyers.
