For those who have hunted these areas- La Sal vs Book Cliffs, which do you think is more conducive to baiting for black bears? Looking to draw a NR archery tag for spring bear.

I baited black bears for 4 years in Canada and we killed over 140 bears in those 4 years. But where I call home is between the Books and La Sals. I've ran hounds on bears my entire life here. One of the biggest complaints I hear of around here is guys baiting that have houndsmen running the same bears they are trying to bait. In a lot of areas on both units, if the bears you are trying to bait are crossing roads, they are going to be ran with hounds. That's something to plan on from the start, not your fault, not the hound guys fault. It's just life on public ground. Whichever unit you choose, I would suggest contacting some of the houndsmen that run that unit to find out where you will have the most conflicts and troubles with the issues. Most hound guys go back to the same units year after year and know where the bears are as well as where all the hunters are. I know there are plenty that would love to give you info on areas to try that would benefit everyone. If you decide on the Books, contact me, I would love to give you information on areas with high bear numbers and low numbers of other people to contend with. If it can help you have a great experience without a conflict with hounds, then I'm more than happy. Us hound guys already deal with enough discontent from the rest of the hunting crowd.

Either way, good luck in the draw and happy hunting.

Good point on the hounds. I didn't think about hounds running the same bears. the challenge then is finding an accessible bait station, maybe on a wheeler trail, that not to much truck traffic hits. Or packing in bait, fun.

There's a lot of country on the books that doesn't get run much, if at all by hounds. Just due to the type of terrain and accessibility. It's a matter of knowing where to be. If you decide on the Books and draw, let me know. I'd be more than happy to give you some great places to bait.
