Bobcat Hides

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-14 AT 11:38PM (MST)[p]I have taken bobcat now and then, mostly as depredation. Lately I have been thinking of killing a few more and selling the hides, but I don't know anything about the process. Where and when may they be sold (nearest to Reno)? Would those shot with a .22 rimfire magnum or long rifle suffer much markdown at market relative to those trapped, assuming no large exit wound? And how do the fur buyers prefer them to be prepared? Is it necessary to leave claws on? Eyelids? Lips? Am I correct in assuming that these are to be dried fur-side out? If so, then how does the buyer determine whether or not the cat is fleshed properly? I would appreciate any advice you all might provide. Thanks in advance.

Lots of places to sell hides, I send all mine to the fur auction in canada( NAFA) and get pretty good prices. As far as the 22, just sew up the holes and youll be fine. Yes you are correct about being dried fur side out, some use borax to fluff the fur for beeter eye appeal. You dont have to leave the claws on, it is cased skinned, dont worry about the eyelids or anything like that, some pull cartiledge out of the ears, others dont, all preference. Fleshing is a process all it own, all cats are different also, some have alot of fat, others have very little, all depends on the area. If you go to trapperman, there is an excellent tutorial in the Fur handling archive for bobcat putup. Hope this answers all your qustions, Thanks Tyler Xtreme

Fleshed and streached. Fur side out. Feet and claws have no value. I usually cut them off at the elbow. I have never pulled the cartlage out of the ears. Fur buyers want the wider and whiter the belly with black spots the more money its worth. They look at mostly the belly. A big tom with a narrow belly might not fetch you very much but a big tom with a good belly might get you a big paycheck.

If you get a really GOOD one, they sell for a bunch more to the taxi guys then to the fur buyers. That one I would freeze in the round(un-skinned) let the taxi do his own skinning. Fallon Nv I believe have a huge fur market sale in Feb. My buddy catches between 30-50 a year, he sell them up there.
The really good ones are sold separate lots, then the run of the mill cats.
