Mt Dutton

Looking for some answers. I posted on the Utah forum but didn't come up with anything I can put my finger on.

A group of us have archery hunted Mt. Dutton for many years. Last season I hunted the first week of archery and my Uncle hunted the second week. He said during the week he was there he shared the mountain with many camps of folks running hounds. In all our years we have never seen this before in that area during that time. After hearing his report I read through the regs and could only find one bear tag given for that area/time. A single bear tag does not explain what he experienced, however I did read that there is provisions for "pursuit" so folks can train their dogs without killing. Is the pursuit thing new for that area/time or has it been in place for a while. Something was different last year compared to all our previous years. Maybe it was as simple as a group of folks choosing to go to Dutton last year instead of where they normally go. I'd appreciate any info. Let me be clear about this. I am in no way upset with, bad talking, bashing or poopooing hounds and/or their handlers. I'm just trying to get the facts so we can plan the timing of our hunts in the future.

Thanks,

Brad

Pursuit/training has gone on for decades. Nothing new. You just happened to be there the same time some folks with hounds were.

So it has went on for decades on that mountain and those same dates? If so, then for some reason many of them decided to go there last year when we haven't ever seen them there before. Maybe word got out that that area had an increase in the predator population. I don't know. Just wish I knew what the condition was that triggered it so I could possibly plan around it in the future. If I don't know then there's no way for me to tell how it will be from year to year.
