Hello, I just received a tag for this bear unit I guess someone surrendered there tag and I was next in line. I know this hunt is spot and stalk only and in the roadless area. I was wondering if anyone has hunted this unit before and had any tips or areas to start looking. I know this will be a challenging hunt but thats what I wanted. I'm an avid backpack hunter and cant wait for the challenge. I didnt want to shoot a bear over bait or up a tree. I would appreciate any info. thanks

Went with my father-in-law last year. He shot one a week into May. We had horses. He was bout 10 miles in. I've heard the later you can go the better it is. Good luck, I'd like to know your thoughts about backpacking in when it is all over.

Thanks for the information I appreciate it. Did you guys see a lot of bears? I know its going to be a rough backpack hunt but I usually backpack in 10+ miles for mule deer with 10 days worth of stuff so I'm use to rough hunting. I figure I will take 2-3 trips down there and stay for 3-4 days at a time. I will have a couple of guys with me to help as well. I should be a fun adventure.

I hunted elk on Little Creek Ridge a number of years ago. If you pack back in that far you should find some bears.

I was only there in April for 2 days. He went back in May and shot one after two days. Reason I ask about your thoughts after it is over is because i have thought about doing the same thing. My father in law has the horses and I don't want to depend on him incase he can't make it for some reason.

Thanks for the information. I will let you know how it goes. I'm in the same situation. I have access to horses but they are not mine so I'm not counting on being able to use them. Did you guys come in from the north or south?

South from Thompson Springs. It was a little ugly in April towards the top. You're probably fine this year. I was talking to my father in law and it was more around mid May when he shot his bear.

Just based on information from fall hunters I would:
1. Back Pack in
2. Set up tent
3. Set yourself up a little ways from tent.
4. Shoot bear before it destroys your tent.
:) :) :)
It seems like a lot of roadless hunters get there tents destroyed every fall.

That isn't spot and stalk that baiting them. LOL
I hear they do hit alot of camps so maybe a nice big batch of Bacon on the fire shouldn't hurt.

I'm planning on going down there next weekend. I just hope this weather doesn't mess up my plans and the roads are decent to get back in there.
