Hey guys,

I'm new on here so hello everyone! I drew the San Juan fall spot and stalk bear tag. I spent a lot of days down there for my dads elk hunt a few years ago but could use some knowledge on bears down there. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, DHTine

Hey dh, I live here on the San Juan unit and have helped quite a few guys on the spot and stalk. Best advice I can give you is usually that time of year they will be in the oak brush eating acorns or in the cedars eating pine nuts. Be prepared to glass until your eyes bleed, and the more days you can get in the same spot that you know there's bears the better chance you'll have! Good luck, I hope you get a good boar!

Thank you Twabbis! I plan on going down for two solid weeks so I hope that gives me the time to find one. I know the success ratio isn't super great. I don't know if that's partly from people no spending the time or if it is just really tough. There's a lot of tags and that is my biggest concern.

It's pretty dang tough, if the hunt was in September I think the success ratio would be much higher. In October you don't see them out in the open country nearly as much. If there's lots of acorns this year then I'd say your best bet is to find an oak brush hillside that has some pretty good visibility and watch it for 2 weeks.

I put in for the bear hunt in my area too. It's Sept 2nd-30th.

OP........As was said. Look for natural food sources. Berries are always good. I like to still hunt into the food sourses that i've scouted. I never sit and wait. I just move on to the next one. In the fall bears are feeding 20 hours a day and might be covering a 20-60 square mile area. Waiting for a bear to show up would drive me crazy and is mostly a waste of time.

Yeah everyone has there methods, but if you've ever tried to still hunt the oak brush on the San Juan I think you'd see how impossible that is as well. I'm not saying it could never happen but IMO you're better off staying in a concentrated area where you know there are bears. That has worked for me here better than bouncing from place to place. There's always more than one way to skin a cat, but sitting and glassing a small area has worked best for me.
