My wife drew a bait tag. What is the best things anyone who has baited bear used. I don't like in a area where I can get lots of bakery items due to small town. But any suggestions on best bear baits.
I was wondering if restaurant old cooking grease, or things like that work.
Thanks,

Being omnivores, bears will eat anything, just sometimes certain things work better than others. They want to eat, and pack on calories. The very best thing to hold them on a bait is meat, followed by breads and pastries. I have used peanut butter, bacon, maple syrup, dog food, veggies, and molasses soaked oats for livestock. The biggest thing is to not let it run out once they hit it, or they may move on.

I really don't think there is any one magic food that bears just have to have. What I have been told is that a good variety is best and then refill what they are eating the most.

Congrats on the tag. Which unit did she draw?

old cooking grease works awesome, the great thing about that is they get it on there paws and track it everywhere, it really help get the scent out we pour it on everything surrounding trees on the barrel anything they can touch. we also make the bear suckers, even if your baits run out of food these keep the bears coming in. we had alto of luck with these, just google bear sucker and it comes up with how to make them, also if you can find a butcher where you can get beef or pig fat that's what we always start with. or a farmer that has had a few calves die, you will have to check what is legal though in Idaho they can not have the hide on them I believe, I am not sure what the rules are in Utah. I would also look into the honey burns, you put honey in a pot and put it on one of those little cookers. one more thing that could be an option is there is places around here that sell bear bate. I believe it is like .20 cents a lb. you can bring your own barrel and they will fill it up. it is just a mixture of cookies, molasses, granola. if you are interested I could get you there number I think they will deliver for a fee. im not sure how far but it might be worth a call.

I have a San Juan summer tag as well. I'm just going to use cheap dog food and oats and corn from the feed store covered in molasses and all the bacon grease I can cook between now and then.

I hope it works for you Twabbis. I am not sure what we are going to use yet, or where we are going to bait. Have you contacted forest service or BLM yet? wondering how hard it is to comply with baiting regs.

From what I understood, April 1st is the first day you can request a baiting location. Are you from nearby? I wonder if you're far away maybe I could help you out with your stations and we could both have 4 options instead of 2?

Baiting on U.S. Forest Service lands
Starting this year, if you are interested in
using bait on lands administered by the U.S.
Forest Service (USFS), you no longer need
permission from the USFS before applying for a
certificate of registration from the Division.

I am trying to understand this, it says you no longer need permission from USFS before applying for a COR.

It says before applying but doesn't say that you don't need the permission to hunt from.

Anyhow TWabbis I live in Blanding. From what I understand and I might be wrong but the division wont let you use the other persons site, it has to be registered to only one hunter.

Yeah I think you're right. Looks like only one hunter per bait site. But there's a lot of bears and I think only 10 tags so I think it will be a way fun hunt! I live in Monticello so I'm putting my bait over here on this side. I did get quite a few bears on my trail can over on elk ridge last year, if you want some info you can PM me, unless you've already got spots you're gonna try. There's bears prett much everywhere lol :)
