Utah Coyotes

Hello,

Long time reader of this forum. First post. I have a 10 yr old boy who is really getting hooked into the outdoors and has been forever. Now that he understands more adds that pressure for me. I am looking for a good place to hunt coyotes here in Utah. I live in Utah County but not opposed to driving for a great outing. He has really been itching to get out and go. I am pretty new to the coyote game and would love to be able to take him out. I appreciate any help you may lend a fellow hunter.

I've shot a ton of coyotes over the decades but it's been incidental and "accidentally on purpose".

I have no idea where you should go to actually HUNT one but several of my friends head way north, way south or way west to get into them (like different States). They're serious yote hunters.

Plan on going far and wide and way out of happy valley to get a couple although there are a few coyotes around here too.

If it were me and you wanted to have a great time with a 10 year old, I'd go west or south and walk some sage and pop a couple jacks with the varmint rifle. Nothing is as thrilling and challenging as running jacks with a CF rifle. There's no better tune-up than that! Just my 2 cents.

Good luck,
Zeke

Try up towards snowville area. Always see a couple when I am up that way. But road hunting coyotes is going to put a lot of miles on your car.

Hard part is they are wise to calls so getting a setup is difficult. Little brother stuffed a yote when he was in taxidermy school. We set that guy out in the middle of an opening and give some barks. That seems to work pretty well. Maybe you could find a way to mock up a silhouette covered in hair?

Or go up that way and cross into the Idaho side toward City of Rocks. Not as many people hunt the Idaho side so they are still kind of dumb.

Good luck.

Bad advise about Idaho. They can give you a ticket if you have a gun out of it's case in Idaho without an Idaho hunting licence. If you don't have a licence, stay away from there.

I guess I should have clarified that he would need to buy an Idaho hunting license. I typically buy an annual hunting license for Idaho so it's not an issue I even think about. Still a good option to hunt coyotes. But probably not worth buying a hunting permit for only a day of hunting.

Lots of new snow across the central Utah mountains.
I've ran a-lot of canyons the last two weeks,
cut coyote tracks in almost every single one!

Still quite a few yotes out there even with the bounty.....

Get out of town and give it a try. I've done it for years and I'm still learning. Do a google search for coyote hunting techniques. To teach him the right way I recommend going over everything and explain why your doing certain things. Don't slam the truck door, whisper if you have to talk once leaving the rig, only skyline yourself if absolutely needed, try to get an elevated spot so you can see the approach of the animal, etc. It can be a lot of fun. Have a talk about what you want to happen then what could happen. They will almost always at some point work down wind from you. Explain that as well. Hunting coyotes can be rewarding and a great learning expierience for all involved. Techniques learned can be used for most all game species. I recommend sitting together for a few trips, letting him be the rifle man and you carry a shotgun. You can oversee everything and be ready incase one slips in close like they do.
I inve your position
Have fun!!

I know they use to have a dead animal dump( lot of road kill) west of Cedar City that was a really a good place to call in/or sneek in and sit. It was a good place for young shooters get a few dogs at first light, If you know a few farmers that are willing to call ya to pick up all their dead livestock, and let you put in all in one place, The Dogs will find it quick enough. Good time to set up a free lunch counter is when there is deep snow.
