Utah Bear

My wife and I have killed several bears in Idaho but we have never hunted bear in Utah. We each have enough points to draw most units in the state and we are not sure if we want to hunt this year or next but we figured we should start somewhere and begin to gather any information that we can.

For those of you that are willing to help out, we are leaning towards hunting over bait and looking for opinions on the different units in the state and any past experiences you are willing to share.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I live on the San Juan and have baited for myself and for my mom. Hands down my favorite hunt and we both killed nice boars. Be a hell of a drive from Idaho though

San Juan & La Sal are definitely the best units for quantity & quality, but you can still have a great hunt & kill a nice bear on other units that are closer to you like the Wasatch, Manti, and Nebo.

I am not familiar with the more northern Utah units for bear, so can't speak to those.

I had a premium/multi-season tag last year on the Nebo unit and killed a great boar with hounds, but I also had 2 bait sites going with some good bears coming in. Definitely one of the funnest hunts I have done in a while!!

Diffently the highest concentration of bears live on San Juan and LA Sal but I would not get too hung up on quality for them two units most units in the state has good quality and quantities. The world record bear came off of the Manti up above Ephraim and if you get a copy of Utah Big Game Records you will see how wide spread quality goes.

We really appreciate all of the information. We actually live in Northern Utah and do regularly travel long distances to hunt but handling a bait site 5 hours away probably isn't feasible. I have spent a lot of time on the southern part of the Manti hunting elk so I am familiar with that area and will look more into the bear situation there.

Thanks again for the info and to those of you that have shared your past bear hunts on this site. Those stories are why I keep coming back.
