I would also not get discouraged. Although you put in your time and energy, learn from this year and maybe he or another youth can draw in the future and you can help them. I think with hunting, a lot of luck and being in the right place at the right time is the key.
Believe it or not, I know some guys who won't pick up shed horns. Guess they're to much of an inconvenience I'll don't understand. And they kill 200" bucks but shed's don't do anything for them.. Weird I know.

There's only a couple things concerning with your question. They might be, in no particular order;
1. stating your a relatively new member
2. stating your a non resident
3. stating your gathering info on...
unfortunately, tags won't be easier to get in the future, there are simply too many hunters for permits. You could always buy spike elk rifle tags over the counter.

Thompsons smokehouse in Erda sounds like just what you're looking for and is the best I have found. Give them a try. I also prefer strip jerky over ground up. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
This is the second year they have had this hunt. I have a tag in a couple of weeks along with two of my buddies for the same hunt. We are getting excited.
I agree the technology (long range rifles and spotting scopes) are contributors to the biggest bucks being shot each year. They can no longer stay across the canyon from the hunter and be safe. If they come out of their hiding spots and are seen, they will likely be killed.
