    New Mexico Mule Deer

The mule deer rut (whitetail too) is influenced by photoperiod. The farther south you go, the later the rut. You should most likely think about your hunt as a mid-October hunt up north: after shedding velvet but before any rut activity, unless you are bordering Colorado.

Report Finds That New Mexico’s Elk Licensing System Favors Wealthy Landowners and Out-of-Staters Over Residents

No, those splits are for draw tags (which may be used on public or private). UW landowner tags have no restrictions on res vs non-res, and it so happens that mostly nonresidents buy the UW tags. I believe one roundabout point of the article is that the 84/6/10 split is (most likely) not...

Report Finds That New Mexico’s Elk Licensing System Favors Wealthy Landowners and Out-of-Staters Over Residents

I mean, the access is supposed to be the same. Did you call NMDGF / a warden? No doubt some landowners violate this rule due to lax enforcement, but I haven't observed it myself.

Report Finds That New Mexico’s Elk Licensing System Favors Wealthy Landowners and Out-of-Staters Over Residents

I feel like I could just copy/paste my post from last year. The problems with the EPLUS program are its size, and the out-of-control tag prices. I wouldn't mind forking over $1-2K for an elk tag if I didn't draw, but in my understanding the prices are 2-3X that, even for marginal units. 1. What...

    Proposed season structure 2025-2029

Food for thought, from the report, discussing rifle OTC elk tags: "Potential disadvantages to maintaining the status quo for OTC rifle elk licenses over the next BGSS: ... Bull harvest and herd sex ratios will continue to largely be regulated by the second and third season participation and...

    Javalina

I shot at 28y. Archery is a different beast! Makes rifle hunting seem easy though. It ain't complicated. Don't be seen, herd, or smelled. Watch their eyes: if you can't see their eyes, they can't see you. Go slow. Take a step, reevaluate. Another step, another evaluate. Just because it's...

    Javalina

I got one on the fourth day. I saw fewer than I expected and mainly in thicker cover, but only my second javelina hunt. I had given up and decided to focus on quail. Then saw him about 200y from the road and put a good stalk and shot on him.

It's open, where you putting in for?

I will put in for everything. I 100% expect to draw deer and elk, and usually draw at least one other tag. Exciting! I think trying to hunt the same units for deer and elk is a good strategy. However, I do think the good deer units are not necessarily good elk units, and vice versa.

    Shotguns

If it helps, my grandfather's Remington 1100 12ga is nearly 100% reliable, even when it needs to be cleaned, like it does now.
