I drew a rifle tag for the Thousand Lakes unit last year and spent a good two weeks up there. It's a beautiful area, but I was definitely disappointed in the low deer numbers, and the hunting experience in general.
I was all set to do exactly that, until they started talking about banning scopes here in NM a couple years ago. Thank God for the ban. I saved thousands $$$ ?.
Wherever you wind up, I hope the weather cooperates for you. I've done those late m/l hunts on private land in both Nebraska and South Dakota. In my experience the deer are skittish as hell and almost exclusively nocturnal after the rifle hunt and the rut. If it's not bitterly cold and/or...
I've recently heard the same thing about 80 specifically from local folks I know. None of those units are what they were 20 years ago. I drew 81 in 2015 and wound up turning the tag back in. The story I got is that they've issued too many doe landowner tags in the SLV overall.
I don't know if Jerry is trolling us or not, but what I do know is that I haven't seen or heard anything positive about the antelope situation in the SLV in a long time.
If you wind up drawing it I think you'll have your work cut out for you.
