be sure to bring your gps with property lines. In CO private land does Not have to be posted for you to get busted. I would look for fields with does then stake out some bordering public and keep your fingers crossed that a buck crosses the line!

    Henry Mountains Management Buck Hunt

I've never been on the Henries, but have been on the Books a fair amount. I don't think the Books are known for wide bucks like they are for crab claws. I rarely see a wide buck over 26". If you'd be happy with a pretty 25" 4 point then do the Books, otherwise it sounds like the Henries is the...

    Colorado Advice

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-17 AT 07:42PM (MST)[p]I wouldn't do a 2nd season hunt unless you had a lot of pre-season scouting in. Bucks are hard to find then. If you do go 2nd go high. 4th season is a pretty short season, but least amount of pressure and the Bucks are in the rut. The problem I see...

    Colorado Advice

A couple of Questions- How much time can you spend scouting preseason? How much time during hunting season? Do you want to see more deer or better quality? What size deer would you shoot?

    nonres wyoming elk

As a NR you will have No chance in 124. The past years there has not been a random tag, so only Max Point holders get a chance at the few Max Pref tags. Unit 100 has had at least 1 random tag for NR the past few years, so you are looking at a 0.2-0.5% chance at drawing. I wouldn't plan a hunt...

    Barnes TSX BT for Elk

LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-17 AT 09:40AM (MST)[p]I don't think I would ever recommend another bullet than a Barnes for Elk! They are the toughest bullets out there and perform well at all distances. They won't "explode" at close range like some other "long range" bullets do. Here are the only two...

It's a great deer regardless of the official. I have noticed velvet bucks shrink a bit from the green score to the dried out official. Can you post a kill picture for reference?

Unit 444 Colorado New Unit to Hunt

I have always had better luck earlier on the bowhunt. Opening day is late in CO compared to some other states. The dates you say are tough with the Bucks stripping velvet and they tend to disappear. Also when the muzzy season is on they are more jumpy. So I would say the first week is best...

    Tired of sliced hands/fingers...

Why would you cut the lungs/guts out? With elk I always do the gutless method (and just about all animals anymore), even if I can get a truck to it and just put the quarters straight in the bed. Saves you going in blind to unecessarily gut an animal and possible cut yourself...

    mule deer state option

What state are from? For mule deer I think of Nevada, Utah, Colorado. NV will take a couple points for good areas. Utah you can draw many decent General archery areas with 0 points, then hunt the extended if you don't tag out The archery season starts early there (Aug 15th last year) which...

" (knowing I have 0 points in the Elk draw moving forward, and this is probably as close to a once in a lifetime hunt as I may ever have). " Why do you have 0 points in the Elk draw? Have you been putting in for Deer?

    henrys 2016

Draw the tag first, then worry about a guide or DIY, or horses, because the chances are you won't draw in your lifetime :) The management route is a thought if you just want to get on that MT. , but with that many points you could look at a different unit and shoot a 4pt, albeit your chance...

    WY unit 101 deer

During the day I would pick apart bedding areas. I only turned up a some small bucks, including this weird 1x2 that seemed to still be in velvet. If anyone happens to see a nice buck I would love to hear about it.

    WY unit 101 deer

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-15 AT 10:07AM (MST)[p]Was able to go out a couple days opening weekend. Saw a number of elk hunters about. I found a few groups of small bucks. One was the same group where I passed on the 130" 4x4, however he was gone- maybe shot opening day?

    WY unit 101 deer

Here is a picture of my Utah buck. The small 4x4 I saw in WY 101 walked by me at 30yds, but was not what I am looking for. I would love to find a buck like this UT general tag buck. I believe what most have said about the deer being few and far between there. However If anyone may have...

    WY unit 101 deer

With all my other hunts I was only able to make it out to 101 for one weekend during the archery seasons. Luckily my hunting season has gone well so far. I was able to shoot a beautiful buck during the Utah archery season on a general tag. I then was able to shoot an OTC elk in CO, a nice 5pt...

    Book Cliffs Elk

Big Bulls are the last to come out, they wait till the cows are ready for them ;) I shot a bull that looked like the one in the video with good fronts and main beams but short back tines. It went 301". If you're good with that then shoot. Its your tag.

    Colorado Archery Elk

If you are hunting OTC I would say option 2. Late is not better on pressured areas and I see elk go quiet. If you are in a limited area then go last 9 days

    WY unit 101 deer

Got back from a quick scouting trip. The deer sightings were few and far between. I saw 3 does total and 2 fawns. Its going to be a challenge to find a mature buck! lots of glassing Way too many feral horses! can't be good for the deer herd with that much competition. They are aggressive as...

    Disappointed With Colorado unit 21

The number of deer in 21 has really gone down. I remember the first day I went there in 2008 and probably saw 100 bucks the first morning. Every year since then I have seen less and less with smaller bucks the norm. I sure hope it comes around sooner than later though.

    Colorado deer unit 22

With the early season dates the last weekend in 22 will be better than the first if he is looking to kill a bigger buck. Shouldn't be a problem to find just any buck though.

    21/30 colorado/ 61 Colorado vs / Vernon/book cliffs or something else comparable

A friend had the tag a few years ago and this is one of the better bucks we found on the trail camera. He was trophy hunting unfortunately did not fill his tag. (He did kill a 200" last year on a 2nd choice tag though. I had put this pic on another thread on 61)

    21/30 colorado/ 61 Colorado vs / Vernon/book cliffs or something else comparable

I don't think a 61 archery voucher is worth much unless the private land you have access to has deer on it during that season and you see some good ones. 61 gets a lot more pressure than you think- During archery season the bucks like to be up high, which puts them near Divide road with tons...

    WY unit 101 deer

Thanks for all the input so far. I figured this year would be as good as any with all the spring moisture to use my NR points on 101. I like how there are only 25 tags this year so less chance of too many hunters. Then I could hunt general units that take way less points. Also a nice old lady...

    21/30 colorado/ 61 Colorado vs / Vernon/book cliffs or something else comparable

I haven't seen many big bucks in 61 the last few years, but then I was chasing elk with friends. Once again I saw more deer down by the ag fields but that's private. They say the bad winter in '09 killed the mature bucks, then a few years of bad drought '10 to '13 hurt recruitment. Lots of...

    21/30 colorado/ 61 Colorado vs / Vernon/book cliffs or something else comparable

I would have to say whichever one you know the best and will spend the most time in. Colorado has definitely taken a hit the last few years on those units, but hopefully they will be back sooner than later.

I drew a WY 101 deer tag this year even though they cut tags to only 25. Hopefully with the spring moisture there will be good growth this year. If anyone has experience there, or pics of any buck that have come off that unit in the past it would be appreciated. Will be heading out for a...

    Colorado 41 and 421
