I've hunted that unit once for elk and twice for deer all rifle and scouted a few times in Sept. IMO, the 7500-8500' band and water is where it's at for that time of year. Lot's of people on that hunt but lots of room to spread out plus two weeks means very few people at times.

I'm like that at the local deer lease which has made quit considering inches. Now it's about history, story or unique / cool factors that may trip my trigger. Sounds much the same for you but the winter kill has certainly changed the near term Outlook for you. Best of luck with your hunts and...

I'd like to say he needs another year but no way I'm passing that deer. That shot angle and bedded at 58 is a little out of my personal comfort zone.

I was working in and out of the house so I'd stop and watch when I could. Even that was difficult. And Hamlin winning capped it off as a complete disappointment. Less and less interested every day.

That was hard to watch and made for an uncompetitive finish.

Great job, I've been doing the same for many years for the same reasons as you. I just upgraded to a 30 pound electric stuffer from a 15 pound hand crank. It's been one of the best things I bought and I wish I hadn't put it off for sooooo long.

There's some good hiking in the cloudcroft area and great stuff about about hour north in ruidoso. I agree with the above and think I'd stay close by in case things change. Unless this lost day will be made up on the back end then go out and have fun.

I like to shoot and I'm capable of shooting a fairly long ways. That last part take practice in many forms, 22LR, 17HMR, 6.5 Creed, 7 SAUM and soon to be 338 RUM. My last big gun was a 30 Nosler which I put 400ish rounds on 3 years. Prior to that was a 300 WM with a lot lot lot of rounds on it...
