    Colorado 44 2nd season

The OP must be a resident. Last year D-M-044-O2-R took 16pts for NR, 2 out of 7 with 16 drew. He said he has more than enough points with 15, so safe to assume he is a resident? Only takes 5 or 6 for a RES to draw that tag. If he is a nonresident he will likely not draw. Last year it was a...

And you think Utah non residents are the issue

It is true, just look at... well, everything. The only thing that matters is who creates the most compelling narrative. Truth no longer exists, and for those who try to find it, nobody really cares. Anti hunters and non hunters are the overwhelming majority, they create the narrative. It...

And you think Utah non residents are the issue

We live in a post truth world, and whoever creates the best narrative wins. Nobody cares that you can identify that this "isnt really about hunting". Congrats, youre so smart. The whole "youre playing into the narrative" is irrelevant and pointless. Hunters are a very small percentage of...

    Elk taxidermy

Nice looking mount. A lot of taxidermists these days are really taking the "squinting/peering/looking" eye to an extreme that doesnt look right. This one does not, very natural looking. I like it.

    Colorado muzzleloader deer vouchers

about a decade ago I had some hunting clients that would base their annual archery elk hunt almost SOLELY around which week in september had the "best" moon phase. They jumped around and switched weeks every year, and never killed anything (couple arrows slung, wounded unrecovered). The guys...

    Early snow question

This is definitely true in some areas. The winter range I watch is pounded by road hunters 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The deer are everywhere down low, but youll hardly see anything bigger than a 3.5yr old. Up above is a large, relatively roadless mountain with lots of private. Drive around during...

    Early snow question

Snow and cold gets em up. Warm and mild puts em down. Think about it like this: Youre walking around all day in a heavy winter coat, just a few weeks ago it was hot, and you didnt have this winter coat. You cannot take the coat off, its part of you. Then it snows 18"and turns frigid! BUT...

    Utah NR shed hunting ban

True! This is a terrible time of year to live in Colorado, I cant even look at animals thru the scope without fear of persecution. Mostly on the social media Im seeing a free for all in Utah with a lot of NONRES and RES shed hunting "influencers" chasing down every shed they can find, creating...

    Utah NR shed hunting ban

Within 5 years a lot of western states will probably have shed hunting restrictions of some kind, the instagram shed hunters are blowing it up. A lot of FOMO and greed running around out there.

    CO gmu 21 or 22

Great looking buck. unfortunately 2020 might as well be 20 years ago in most areas right now. A lot of damage done to the Colorado Mule Deer herds under the current 5 year season structure + 2023 Winter.

    3rd season options

Currently as things are, you have almost just as good a chance of seeing a 170+ class buck on certain 2nd choice 2nd season tags as you do in the gunnison basin or a lot of other units that take 10+ points to draw a 3rd or 4th. If its 170 or bust for you, prepare for disappointment. This issue...

Taker or No? How wide and what does he score?

Well, since we actually have numbers to go along with the rear view... just my gut feeling without running any "mental calculations" 28" outside spread 179" Gross

Taker or No? How wide and what does he score?

Never judge a deer from the back, especially with its ears pinned back. Wide with nice front forks, but small top forks with a thin frame. With that said, I shot him before making this analysis.

Spending pts in CO 3rd year in a row

Given youre ability to get back there and away from the crowd, 66 2nd rifle could be interesting. Barring a large early fall dumping of snow which has happened maybe 2 times in the last decade, you could potentially have a good time venturing into the powderhorn wilderness as the bucks migrate...

    Age this Bull

Need to see the bottom jaw and teeth! otherwise its just a WAG. Somwhere between 4 and 10? Its a great elk, just no way to answer your question without the lower jaw. YOUR guess, is literally as good as mine, and looks like youve probably seen a few more than me in your days;)

Another thing to consider.... That 2nd season unit 44 hunt.. This is likely the last year itll be this late. Starting 2025 2nd season will be pushed up a week to where it used to be (and where it should be) Looks like several of the units you have mentioned are Gunnison basin units. Food for...

This is very true. Where I hunt, I see tons of deer, nice bucks to boot, during 1st season elk. Right before 2nd season they usually begin their mirgration and become much harder to find until they pop up on the winter grounds.

Maybe for tags that take 15+ points (or 10+,) that get returned, if they cant find someone to take the tag in the first 5 contacted, they just remove the tag from the pool and no one gets it. That would certainly remove any questioning, whining and complaining in regards to that issue. This...

Aside from all the obvious issues, its really pretty amazing how much country those animals have covered. Proposed season structure 2025-2029

That too for sure!! Archery will likely be a Zoo this year, more so than the last 3 or 4 years. Last chance! Either way, limiting access during september is a good idea. The FS roads were getting too crowded, grouse were becoming hard to come by 🙄 😅

    Preference point

I dont care if it affects point creep or not. When people use colorado as a backup plan with 95% intentions of returning a tag, they are potentially taking that tag away from someone else who may have really enjoyed their time in the woods with that tag. Instead it gets returned in thrown...

    Proposed season structure 2025-2029

Im good with doing away with OTC rifle elk tags as well. Have never participated in that portion of the season. Obviously they left it out because it would cause the most uproar amongst residents.

    Proposed season structure 2025-2029

Archery season occurs during the rut. The number of hunters should be limited, regardless of weapon. The free for all must end. Just because you wear face paint and sling an arrow doesnt mean you dont have an impact.

    Proposed season structure 2025-2029

As it relates to the colorado mule deer herd, moving the season structure foward to the 2015-2019 format is great news. Moving the seasons back in 2020 did a lot of damage very quickly, this is really good news. It will be interesting to see how they set the unit quotas for the archery draw...

That might be a tough find. Last year hunt code DM054O1A (which i assume is the hunt code youre applying for?) had 5 unrestricted land owner tags issued in the draw. Dont recall seeing any on either of the voucher marketplaces last year.
