I’m lucky enough to live in BC, so I can hunt sheep OTC. Otherwise, it would be all mule deer!

Unit 54 vs 55, 2nd Rifle Mule Deer

That was originally my plan. I hunted 53 3rd season in 2015 and was hoping to hunt 2nd season there this year, but point creep and the reduction in non-resident tags put the kibosh on that. I'll hunt 67 2nd this year (I hope!) and then look for an archery tag in either 53 or 67 in a couple of...

Unit 54 vs 55, 2nd Rifle Mule Deer

Thanks everyone for the input. I decided to go with 67 to avoid the OTC elk hunters. We'll see how it goes!

Unit 54 vs 55, 2nd Rifle Mule Deer

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like the OTC elk hunters negatively impact the quality of the hunts on the north side of the Gunnison Basin and in any event mature bucks are scarce. I might try 67, although I gather that the quality of bucks there isn’t any better than 54/55. If anyone has...

Unit 54 vs 55, 2nd Rifle Mule Deer

I'm trying to decide between units 54 and 55 for a 2nd season mule deer hunt. I have 7 nonresident points, so should be able to draw either one (subject to how the new non-resident caps drive point creep!). Unit 55 issues fewer tags, which is a plus in terms of pressure, but Unit 54 seems to...

    Mule Deer 171-173 muzzleloader

It's been a while since I was in there (2007), but I hunted the early rifle there a couple of times. I backpacked up into the Arc Dome Wilderness, in the area around Tom's Canyon and Peavine Canyon. There are good horse trails up into those areas, coming in from the south. There were plenty of...

Area 6 Late Elk Hunt (pics)

thyrsty, we stayed at Taylor Canyon. Cabins are basic (a room with beds) but do the job. Owner is friendly, and a hunter, and at least one outfitter was staying there with a client. Location is good in terms of being within striking distance of a number of good elk areas. I would stay there...

Area 6 Late Elk Hunt (pics)

The 4 bulls had moved by the time we got back to them, but we did spot another group of 6 bulls with a decent 6x6 and nice 5x5, but nothing we wanted to pursue. After a quick discussion, we decided to head up and over the mountains to check the back side of the range, as it appeared that the...

Area 6 Late Elk Hunt (pics)

Day 5 we connected with Shedneck, who took us to a new area west of Tuscarora. Shedneck really knew the country and took us to some great glassing locations. At the first one we spotted a herd with a nice 6x6 and a couple of smaller bulls. Later in the day we spotted another group of 4 bulls...

Area 6 Late Elk Hunt (pics)

We tried to get back into the area where we'd seen the 5x8 the following day, but encountered white-out conditions. We did manage to spot a couple of smaller bulls during a break in the weather, but for the most part day 3 was a washout. Day 4 we were able to get back into the area where the...

Ok, looks like that worked. Day 2 it was COLD: (sorry about the celsius, but that's what you get from us Canadians) We headed to the Cornucopia Ridge Area on our second day. I was fortunate enough to have arranged access to the IL Ranch prior to my hunt (I recommend that anyone with this...

    Nevada Units 62, 64, 66-68 late

Hey everyone, I posted in the Nevada forum a couple weeks ago, but no responses so I thought I'd try the elk forum as well. I've got a late season bull elk tag for these units. I've collected maps, scouted extensively using Google Earth, read the Hunt Information Sheet and talked to a couple...

    Units 62, 64, 66-68L Elk

Is anyone able to provide any info on these units? I've spoken to a couple of hunters who hunted it in 2013 and 2014, and none of them were successful. Given that I used 10 points on this unit, I'm thinking of turning in the tag and having my points reinstated, but I don't want to do that...

    Unit 35 3rd Season Colorado

Hey crown, I had this draw a decade ago. There were plenty of deer on the public land back then, and I gather the population is doing better now. I hunted the Bull Gulch Wilderness Area, Castle Peak Wilderness Area and the area east of Pisgah Mtn. Saw bucks in all 3 areas, the best ones near...

    BC full curl definition

WV has it correct, although his last paragraph applies to thinhorn sheep (we have both Dall's and Stone's in BC). Rules for bighorns vary depending on the area, can be 3/4 curl, full curl, or mature (mature is over the bridge of the nose; see regs for definition of the other 2).
