Do You Get Your Deer Scored

Obviously, based on my handle, I score the animals my family, friends, and I kill. I do this for a couple reasons: 1. I choose to hunt for more mature animals. Typically (obviously not in all cases), that means bigger antlers, i.e. higher score. It's a challenge. If someone chooses to shoot...

    Retrieving Game

Yeah, I saw that, but the question is what are "certain public lands"? Does that refer to the mobility impaired hunts? It's just not very clear. If I can hike 7 miles in and shoot a bull and don't have to pack him out, then I'd think that's a game changer for everyone. Not a fan of the rule if...

    Retrieving Game

I recently had someone tell me that it was ok to drive a vehicle off road across BLM to retrieve downed game. Is this true? I tried to look up a regulation that said this was legal but couldn't find anything. I've heard of other states that have this rule, but I want to say there's a mile limit...

Nm votes to support the federal wolf recovery program

LAST EDITED ON Aug-28-17 AT 02:27PM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Aug-28-17 AT 02:26?PM (MST) AYC, if you don't think the reintroduction/wolf recovery program is purely an agenda driven by money and social/emotional legislation, then you are as naive as my lingerie model wife that thinks every man she...

To Call or Not To Call

Listening to podcasts, daydreaming about September and just thought I'd throw this out there for conversation. Date: September 20th; Archery Elevation: 6,000 - 8,000 ft. Terrain: Steep draws to rolling foothills; mostly juniper trees ranging from really thick pockets to wide open areas. Not...

    Snake Bite

Sludge, I don't know how you've hunted NM and AZ and not seen any snakes unless you've had nothing but late season hunts. LOL! I've killed 8 - 10 rattlesnakes in New Mexico every year over the last 4 years just during hunting season (and we're talking about a 2-3 week period, not the entire...

Fed UP! with the point system

DIY, first, I can't believe you posted that unless you are just trolling. Second, you could have saved a lot of breath and just said, "Who needs tags when you can just POACH deer?!" I mean you do understand that your "dad's friend" is just a straight-up poacher, right? You do understand that...

NEW #1 Pope & Young Archery Mule Deer Buck

Absolute STUD! I am not usually a fan of velvet, but for some reason, I think this buck just looks that much better in velvet. I understand stripping him for scoring, but I might would have to put fake velvet back on after having him scored. Like I said, I normally don't like velvet, but this...

    Elk taxidermy

Looks great! I've always wondered how an elk would do on a floor pedestal stump. I didn't know if there would be issues with keeping it balanced. I have a couple whitetails on a cedar stump, but they obviously don't weigh near as much and don't extend out as far.

How About Some Pics of 45 or 90 Degree Mounts

Would love to see some pics of anyone who has mounted a bull at a 45 or 90 degree turn. Trying to get some ideas and hoping to get a little extra ceiling clearance if the nose is tipped up slightly. Thanks!

    Spotting scope vs. high-power binoculars

15x binos on tripod and the Kuiu bino harness are the only way to go. Bought both a few years ago and it's possibly the best hunting purchase I've ever made.

    Right Area/Wrong Hunt

I can't speak to Utah specifically, as I've never hunted there, but the late hunt is tough. Areas that will be packed full of good bulls and cows running around in September will be completely different in November. For example, last year I hunted the first week of September and we found 7-8...

    Boot question

The Salomon's are a solid boot. Super comfortable right out of the box, your foot stays in place all day, good ankle support, no hotspots, they breathe well, but are also waterproof. I used mine for three years and they were a great boot. The only possible knock on them could be that the sole...

    Point Creep

I can't speak to this year in particular, but 9 years ago, we drew with either 4 or 5 points (I can't remember exactly). This year we had nine points going in to the draw for the same hunt and didn't pull a tag. This was for a muzzy hunt, and three of us applied individually. If/when I...

How Do You Attach Elk Sheds?

Question for you taxidermists or others who have mounted elk sheds. How do you position and attach them? Manufactured skull plate (like mountain mikes)? Build your own plate? Use something different altogether? I have attached several deer sheds with no problem at all using mountain mikes...

Shoot! Or isn't he big enough?

Really tough one. If that's all the time I had, he probably would have gotten away...and I may have kicked myself later if I never saw him again. One of those "right on the edge" bucks.

    Colorados point system

I am not a fan of preference points. Yes, the argument is that it allows you to "plan", but who really wants to "plan" 15 years out? For CO, I'm the guy right in middle (I have 10 points)...been in the game too long, but not even close having enough points to draw a top unit as a NR. Yes, I...

    Boots

LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-16 AT 08:12AM (MST)[p]For those trashing Salomon, I'm guessing you've never tried them. I was skeptical at first because they are not a name brand when it comes to hunting boots, but they have been the best boots I've bought to date. Yes, they are a little softer than...

    New Mexico ELK 2016

I put in for NM, but their NR system sucks. They screwed the NR over when they dropped the allocation to 6%. At a bare minimum, they should swap the NR and outfitter allocation percentages. I do like the "you have a CHANCE to draw every year" system versus bonus/preference points, but it's...

Pics/Ideas of Bull Elk Mounts with 10' Ceilings?

Thanks Elkster! Don't get me wrong, I really like floor pedestals, it's just the space that they take up. I have a cedar trunk that I made that holds three mounts, and I think it's awesome, but it's also big. My hope is that at least if it's on the wall you can still walk underneath it or have...

    Shoulder Mounts for Low Ceilings

HJB, that's a sharp looking mount! Any idea how tall the mount is from the brisket to his tallest tine? My bull has 20"+ royals as well, so should be pretty comparable to yours. Stopped by the taxi again today and he's going to throw my antlers on a spare form he's got laying around and let me...

    Shoulder Mounts for Low Ceilings

Hey guys, I posted this in the taxidermy section, but figured I might get more responses here. Anyone care to share pics of shoulder mounts for low ceilings? I will have 10' ceilings in my new house, which aren't super low, but still low for an elk. I know there's a lot of full sneak poses...

Pics/Ideas of Bull Elk Mounts with 10' Ceilings?

Finally killed a good bull this year, and I guess I built my house about 3 months too early. LOL! Otherwise, I would have made sure to put a gable in somewhere to hang my elk mount! So, anyone got any ideas for poses that will work with a 10' ceiling? I'd rather have him on the wall than a...
