    257 Ackley improved

You might want to anneal every three or so loadings. My brass gets a little hard in the shoulder area and is prone to cracks without annealing.

    257 Ackley improved

I bought my wife a 257 AI in a Win model 70 Featherweight years ago. My best load for it is a Sierra 117 gr SPBT at about 2850 fps. Sub MOA and kills deer and antelope like a lightning bolt!

    23 Buck on the Wall!

We got him at 151-153, but I am not an official scorer. He is my biggest buck and the biggest we have taken from our small ranch.

    23 Buck on the Wall!

Picked up my 2023 buck from the taxi today. I thought he turned out real well. Replaced a smaller but heavier buck on my wall.

    Caliber Thoughts

I love the quarter bores. I bought my wife a .257 Ackley and we love it. I doubt I would try to shoot a big Muley at 600 yards with it but it has great ballistics with heavy bullets. My choice would be a 7mm. A 160 grain bullet fired at close to 3000 fps from a 7mm whatever is definitely...

    Gathering Firewood

I don’t go through near as much wood as some of y’all. Wife wants the house warm so I keep a good supply of mesquite cut. Make great BBQ wood too!

Should Governor Type Tags Exist? (Poll)

Hunting is becoming a rich man’s sport where the ordinary lower to middle class guy has less and less chance each year at a tag while the wealthy buy more and more tags, either at auction or landowner. If the wildlife truly belongs to the people, let the people have equal chance at them not...

Have you been, or plan to, go bear hunting? (Poll)

Killed one smallish bear I badly misjudged on size. Did not care that much for the meat. I will probably go again since my hunting buddy and my son both want to kill a bear. I doubt I shoot another one unless it definitely on the large side.

    Drawing results

Not so patiently waiting for the results. Used to draw every 2-3 years before NM cut DIY guys down to 6% of available tags. Have not seen a tag since. Hoping for a tag but not really expecting one again this year.

Trophy Bulls on the Wall - Phone Skope Giveaway

Not as big as many of the bulls that others have taken but my biggest so far. At my age may be my last as hard as tags are to draw! Bull was taken in Colo unit 61. Wood plaque is a slab of mesquite from my place. The ivories are imbedded just below skull plate.

Your Favorite Method of Hunting? (Poll)

I am rifleman at heart. Muzzy if I need to. Killed one deer with a bow and put it up, was not my thing.

    Hobbies outside of hunting?

Nice welds! I can stick two pieces of metal together but at best am just a dirt dobber when it comes to welding. My hobbies outside of hunting are fishing, of which I do a lot, gardening, and horses although I don’t ride near as much or as far as I used to.

    Bull elephant or stone sheep?

I voted elephant, just because I at my age I will never be able to get in sheep shape. I do think if one is in good enough physical shape to tackle the sheep mountains it would be a fantastic hunt In beautiful country. This topic is really all just campfire dreams for me as I could never...

    YOU EVER LOSE A WHEEL???

On a trip to Port Isabel Tx last fall I saw my drivers side boat trailer tire go bouncing across the divided highway. Quick shut down avoided catastrophe. A quick look confirmed we needed a complete hub assembly to continue on. Unhook trailer and go back to the nearest town and found the hub...

    Grading 2023 Colorado Buck season?

I am right there with your rmanwill. Don’t have many years left to hike in rough stuff. Planning to burn my deer points soon. Shifting more of my outdoors time to fishing and hunting family property for whitetails. Changing expectations is going to be necessary going forward, especially for...

    Riding saddles

My favorite is my Corriente ranch saddle. Have put lots of miles in it over lots of varied terrain. As was mentioned a good pad is essential. I use a good 1” wool felt pad. Protects my horses back very well.
