    New Mexico Minimal Guide Service?

Yep. Two-day guide service gets you into the outfitter allocation, but that's all its really worth. Increases your odds in most NM units. Never done it, but friends who have competed with full-paying guided clients, but still managed to kill elk.

    Split archery LE seasons

If you archery guys really think the LE early rifle week is when you want to hunt, then wait a few more years and draw the early ANY LEGAL WEAPON tag and hunt with a bow. Simple. The way I see it, archers have the most opportunity because they can hunt on the any weapon tags too! A few years...

    Manti help.

Saw 60+ elk on a trail ride on the north end of the unit on the 4th holiday. Even heard a few spike bugles after a thunder shower passed through. My experience is that early on you have to get a ways off the roads and away from the ATV traffic to see elk. Glass the old burns 30 min each side...

    Utah Bison

I feel your pain, Jims. Losing the nonres bonus tags is painful for those of us with or close to max points. But if I remember right, the Board upped the number of tags in 2017 or 2018 a on account of the drought, so the 2020 reduction was not unexpected. I may have to move back to UT to draw...

    Muzzy unit options

I hunted the early rifle last year in the "roadless" area on the north end of the Manti. Not really roadless in the wilderness sense, but fewer roads than the rest of the Unit. It was a nice piece of country to hunt from horseback without ATVs buzzing everywhere. I can confirm that sheep...

Central Manti's or La Sal Elk

We dealt with sheep last year on the Manti. We planned to camp on the north end of the unit just south of the burn, but moved farther south to get away from the sheep. We could see and hear them when we went back in to haul my bull out.

    21 non res points

I killed a good bull on the Manti early rifle hunt in 2019 that was every bit as good as my buddy's Mt. Dutton 2018 late season bull, plus I did it in short sleeves!

Central Manti's or La Sal Elk

Badger: I drew a Manti-Central non-res tag last year with 19 points and really screwed up. Got anxious and killed a 330 bull early in the week. Within 30 seconds of the 330 bull hitting the ground, a 380 bull stepped out. I'd go Manti.

    Cache North Question

I have a friend in UT (I'm a KS res) who spends a lot of time riding in the Cache North unit. He would not recommend this unit, even with a guide and stock. I've been on the Unit and echo his recommendations. The unit has low elk numbers and they will not be anywhere you can drive a truck...

My Daughters Youth Elk Hunt in Utah

Tough hunt unless you have access to private. If you can't get permission on private, but can get horses, the Uinta Mountains, both south and north have a few huntable elk. Pick a drainage, get high, and listen. If my daughter had the tag, I'd have her shoot the first elk she sees inside 100...

Utah LE archery elk in then Manti

Agreed there will be elk just about everywhere you go. Late snows this spring may impact how the 2019 archery hunt unfolds. As of today, an unusual amount of snow still remains on top. I would call the CO and get his thoughts.

    2020 elk otc

66/69 has plenty of elk, but lots of hunters. 95% of bull elk killed on the general hunts will be spikes and raghorns. You cannot hike far enough to get away from people, especially in the rifle season. The illegal ATV hunters will drive you nuts on the south side of the unit. That said, never...

    Advice on Idaho OTC units

I've seen good bucks in 66, the sister unit to 69. Every year a couple are taken. Given the number of hunters on the unit, however, I'd put the success rate on good bucks at just about 0%. With the recent Tex Creek fire and severe winter, I would not be hopeful, unless you've spent a lot of...

    Idaho muzzleloader elk

66 has motorized access restrictions during hunting season, so beware. Spikes and raghorns will be plentiful, but you'll have to hike into some of the nasty spots to find a good bull. An army of OTC archery hunters will have call educated the bulls in 66 pretty good by then.

    Grizz in unit 66

We've seen them in 66, though infrequently. A lot more black bears. We all carry pistols once we start packing meat. Never had to use one, and never want to. Shooting a grizzly can be expensive, even if justified.

    Idaho question

Both units hold plenty of elk, but also see a lot of pressure because they are OTC. Easier to get around in 66. Both units hold backpacking opportunities, but don't expect to backpack away from the guys on horses. Terrain in 67 is tougher, especially without pack stock. Put in your time and...

    Idaho unit 66 for elk

Not much backcountry in Unit 66. Lots of ATV trails. Many are closed during the elk hunt, but people ride them anyway. Lots of hunting pressure on opening morning and on the weekend from local hunters. Plenty of NR camps to keep pressure on during the week. By the time the rifle season...
